HELP! Throughout this text, some of the stories are displayed in red to indicate I would like a copy of the story. Also, if a newspaper, magazine, or book is in red, it indicates that I do not have all the bibliographic information I require. If anyone can find the story or has the info, please email me.
It is traditional to have a boring bit of text at the beginning of long lists like this. No doubt you’ve ignored this first time through, flicked through the list, wondered what something means, and now you have to read this section. Sorry, but that’s the way it goes.
For your convenience, I have arranged the stories in alphabetical order, ignoring the ‘a’ ‘the’ etc. prefixes.
Kersh resold many of his stories under different titles. They are all listed here, and are cross-referenced to the most commonly used title. For example The Ape And The Mystery was published 6 times under that title, but the first time the story appeared it was called The Mysterious Smile Of Mona Lisa. It’s listed here under The Ape And The Mystery.
If there are lots of different titles, then I’ve cross-referenced to the first title used.
For each story, there is a list of where the stories have been published. Appearances in newspapers and magazines are listed by title, then the date of publication. Some British and American editions of magazines have different contents. In this case, the magazine title is followed by either UK or US in brackets. If the story is serialised, the individual parts are listed, with the part number at the beginning of each entry. Also, the story may have been published under a different title, so I’ve listed it with ‘as’ and the alternative name at the end of the entry. For example:
John Bull, October 1 1938
Argosy (UK), October 1948, as ‘The Mysterious Smile Of Mona Lisa’
Part 1: Courier, Spring 1953
Whereas inclusion in an anthology is indicated by the title, then the publisher and year in brackets. The editor of an anthology is indicated by ‘ed’ and then the editor’s name. Also, other editions of the same book are listed. For example:
Nightshade & Damnations (ed Harlan Ellison, Gold Medal R1887 1968, Coronet 0839 1969)
I have included the stories published in foreign languages. These are indicated by brackets containing ‘trans’, the language the story was translated into, and the person who did all the hard work. I’ve been told translating Kersh is trés difficult because of all the phonetic sounds he uses. Please note that, parochial devil that I am, I have not listed the foreign titles in the main list for cross referencing. An example of an entry is:
Mann Ohne Gesicht (Diogenes 1977), as ‘Der Affe Und Das Geheimnis’ (trans German Peter Naujack)
Kersh sometimes used pseudonyms, or wrote anonymously. The nom de plume is indicated at the end of each newspaper, magazine or anthology listing following the word ‘by’. For example:
John Bull, April 4 1942, by Waldo Kellar
I don’t like using abbreviations, mainly because when I’m researching I don’t like having to keep a book open on several pages to match up all the cross-references. So I’ve kept it to a minimum, as follows:
AHb = the German edition of Alfred Hitchcock Presents
ed = edited by
EQMM = Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine
EQK-A = the German edition of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine
trans = translated by
