Well, then..I guess I won't be sending you any e-mail, Rick, if you like your box being empty.
Beth, I'm about your age, so you can write to me. Please, no one else does.
I worked during The Great Blizzard of '96. Yeah, that big ole video chain closes for NOTHING. We stayed on the clock all night and slept over in the store to make sure there would be people there to open in the mornings.
The rest of this week, I have done nothing but watch Woody Allen movies. This weekend there will be a convention in my area, so I hope to pick up some Ellison.
Well, I'm off to do some Yoga. And NO yoghurt jokes from you, Wyatt! As a matter of fact, I have been living on tuna, yoghurt, V-8's, wheat bread, granola and fresh fruits and veggies. It's WONDERFUL. You guys should try it. It tastes great and feels great. More energy, low fat, high volume eating. Right now, I'm having a raspberry yoghurt lollipop from work. MMMMMMmmmmmm...
When I come down to Atlanta in a month, I guess I'll have to whip Rick's arse into shape and wean him from those Cheetos and Bud Lites I've heard so much about from a mutual friend. Super Rick, the indestructible god of the InterNet. Hey, it's better than Soup Strainer Face, or, how many operations can a guy have in two years?
Now, I'm off to do some Hatha Yoga. YOGA. It's not a food, Senor Ricardo.
Much love to All,
Shelley Draven, rick's black swan from Hell....

Camper Van Ricktoven (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Tue Jan 9 21:23:48 1996
For the first time in two months, my e-mail inbox is finally, blessedly, EMPTY! I don't believe it! I'm looking at the big blank white "In" box right now and it's GREAT! I can be a terrible procrastinator and I was so tickled pink that I finally got around to all those letters I had been meaning to answer that I had to tell SOMEONE...

Also, I fixed your Marvel comics thingie, Anakin. If anyone really hoses their post bad here, send me e-mail and I will do my best to fix it. No promises, though.

Yours egotistically,
Rick
(Oh yeah, sorry about the Corcajou/Carcajou mixup. I remember now - it was Corcajou that was in the Beatles song and Carcajou that was in that Beach Boy tune..."Bermuda, Bahamas, come on pretty mama...")

keegan Tue Jan 9 20:39:42 1996
With the exception of Good Old Webderland, the 'Net (like most of the east coast) is cold tonight. Maybe it's my machine. I think the cold congeals the plastic in my computer much like the fabled "molasses running uphill in January" (or maybe it's just my increasingly gnarly knuckles fumbling in the frigid temps).

Anyway, I hope you all weathered the storm. It missed us, but we've had snow for months. Our snows haven't been dramatic, but they did buy us a family day in pajamas.
Winter is death in your face. Nothing to be done but deal with it. Like Siberia, it keeps you humble. As the saying goes in Maine, "If you can't take the winter, you don't deserve the summer." Me? I hate it, but I LOVE that summer! Beth, I empathize with your desire to go somewhere else, but Nova Scotia? Uh-uh...not for me. You do whatever makes you happy but my "oh-no-I'm-supposed-to-be-a-grownup!" fantasies (I'm 30) see me moving SOUTH (like to Brazil...sun and samba all day!).

a few wintry thoughts with warmest regards to all
Lauri

Anakin O'Hara Tue Jan 9 18:30:29 1996
What I meant to say that the only Marvel comics that I liked, were the Star Wars adaptions. I'm sorry I was writing too fast. Did everyone enjoy the snow, I spent yesterday on the word processor writing a short story for Heavy Metal Magazine, I hope they like it. Later, Anakin.

Beth Tue Jan 9 18:05:33 1996
Whoops. That ..."replace with..." in my previous message was supposed to be: replace "walk" and "don't walk" with "scamper" and "gyrate".

Anybody know how?

Ed. Note: I do! I do! (it's fixed)

Beth Tue Jan 9 18:03:23 1996
Hello Fellow Ellisonites!

Any advice for someone who is turning 28 next month (I recently explained to an incredulous younger friend that David Lowery (sp?) was in a band before Cracker)-- with her first book less than one-third written (although Anka Radakovich's "Wild Girls Club" has inspired me to speed up)-- stuck in a job which offers free college but keeps her too busy to take classes-- but which she can't quit because she's in debt up to her eyebrows (I'm on a first-name basis with the chick at Citibank)-- whose last date ended with her being made to hide in a closet and sneak out of the apartment (I thought I was in a "Three's Company" sketch!!!!)-- and that's not even going into the failing eyesight and other signs of corporeal decay.

My friends laugh this off as the striking of my biological clock, but that's really not it. I just want to DO SOMETHING... sell everything (NOT my beloved Ellison collection) and move to Nova Scotia-- declare bankruptcy and get a job in a bookstore-- replace "walk" and "don't walk" with "scamper" and "gyrate", then throw jellybeans all over the sidewalk-- before I get any older or the world ends, whichever comes first. If I was a 45-year-old man, I suppose I would buy a red corvette and go to Hooters. What does one do for a "late-20s-crisis"?

Sorry to take up so much space with my babbling. I am not a whiner. I just thought that, before going totally tiddlywinks, I would see what other HE admirers might tell me.

To Rick: Excellent job! I love this place. You manage here to reflect both the cynicism and... dare I say it... cuteness. And you're much too hard on yourself: you're a babe.

O.k., I'll quit gushing now...

The Cornholer (40wattclub@boogantg.fishnet) Tue Jan 9 17:46:46 1996
once again, the ever-egotistical Rick screws up. It's CArcajou, with an A, you moron!
Now, don't be quite so full of yourself, or I'll throw you from the the 45th floor, counting the mezzanine!!!
Rick, be gone!

Rick (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Tue Jan 9 16:06:44 1996
James, I foolishly loaned out my only copy (the Ace paperback) of _The Glass Teat_ a couple of years back and I have been looking for a copy ever since. Bummer.

Corcajou? Isn't that something the Beatles sing in "I am the Eggman"?

James C. Hess (James.Hess@Colorado.EDU) Tue Jan 9 15:26:10 1996
Hi.

Me again. Still love this place!

Anyway, two things:

1. If you go looking for my page keep the following in mind:
http://www.smartlink.net/~olcapss/
And when you get to that page look for "The Buzz".
(Yes. I am as dumb as I look. And your point is...?)

2. Does anyone Out There know what the going price is for an original copy of THE GLASS TEAT and THE OTHER GLASS TEAT? (I'm talking the original paperbacks.) I keep finding copies of them in bookstores and have been acquiring them as funds permit.

Thanks again! I L*O*V*E this place. (It's so much more fun than, say, DisneyLand.) Jim

Tue Jan 9 00:48:40 1996
Personal to Carcajou:
I love you with all my heart, darling.
I'll be in your arms Friday.

Sat Jan 6 15:52:00 1996
something old.....a first edition THE BEAST WHO SHOUTED LOVE..signed.
something new.....a first edition White Wolf, LOVE AIN'T NOTHING..
something borrowed....The Avengers and Hulk comic books.
something blue....ah, MIND FIELDS with Jacek Yerka.

The music? How about a little Morricone. Maybe a little TOO appropriate for a wedding.

Maybe they'll do it in Sherman Oaks (that's a very real possibility), and invite the Big Guy Himself as a GOH.
Maybe he'll say a few words before the ceremony...Susan could be a bridesmaid...

Anakin O'Hara Sat Jan 6 15:16:10 1996
Bonehead O'Hara here, I'm sorry, next time I will pick up SciFi Channel Magazine, but this is like the first time that I have ever seen Harlan on television, well, before I started reading his stories, I didn't know who he was, but I always thank Dark Horse Comics for introducing me to the man behind the story. I liked what Harlan said about Marvel and DC, but the only Marvel comics I ever liked were the adaptions of that space opera trilogy - does Harlan see a bigger future for Dark Horse and Image?

James C. Hess (James.Hess@Colorado.EDU) Fri Jan 5 14:37:58 1996
Hi. I saw your Web site listed in the latest edition of RABBIT HOLE (#18) and thought you might want to look at mine.

Here's how:

http://www.smartlink.net/~olcapss/

Comments, criques, criticisms are always welcomed.

Thanks again. Keep up the great work. Love IT!

Jim

keegan Fri Jan 5 13:49:11 1996
Hello everyone! I just got the latest "Rabbit Hole" and our own beloved Webderland along with its beloved webmeister is mentioned in the "Potpourri" section. Congratulations, Rick!!!

Anakin O'Hara Fri Jan 5 12:37:31 1996
Thanks Lauri, how's everything, I think they are going to do a whole SciFi Buzz show on Harlan tonight at nine on the Sci Fi Channel, I think, check the listings. September 25, that's my favorite actor's birthday.

Sylphen Haven Fri Jan 5 10:59:14 1996
Shelley's getting married, Shelley's getting married!!!!!
I think they should play Queen, from their version of the Wedding March, as played in the film, FLASH GORDON. Don't you?
I think Shelley needs her head examined.

Thu Jan 4 20:49:46 1996
by the way, I didn't finish because my cursor froze. Just think, today she's plain old Shelley Draven, tomorrow she's the old trouble and strife. But, I need to have an early night.
Ah, last lark: my best girl friend joined the pudding club. She's got a litter of twin in her tum and she's looking like a pepper pot! I hope all is well with her, as she is dreadfully afraid and anxious.
Much love,
Shelley

Shelley Draven (Mrs.) Thu Jan 4 20:44:13 1996
Rick, you are too mean. You got my hopes, thinking you had actually written and all.
Anyway, for those of you that noticed, the date has been set for 25 September, 1996. We plan on playing selections from Tori Amos and David Bowie. It won't be fancy dress. Maybe we could do it online, here, at the wonderful Webderful Ellison page.
I am ecstatic. He's not an Ellison person, they're too much alike for him to like Ellison. His name Malcolm Hewitt. He is a comic artist and he does the layouts for a couple of online magazines. We met three years ago, at a science fiction convention, when we were both reaching for an issue of TANK GIRL at the huckster's room. He took me to dinner, trying to pursuade me to give it up, as it was signed. The rest, as they say, is history. He is heavily into Science fiction (Zelazny, Anthony, Poppy Z. Brite..well, she's genre, anyway, and Kate Wilhelm).
He collects anything having to do with wolverines and comic book art. He likes hiking, watching Monty Python, distopia movies, and bragging about his relationship with Neil Gaiman. Me, I like bragging about knowing you guys and especially Rick Wyatt, the Zeus of poetry, as some damned weirdo (sorry, but you are) put it on another board(? is that the right word?)
Me, I'm dying the old brown locks a Tori Amos rusty red. Plus, today I bought a lovely stationary pad with a beautiful rose on it to do the guest list. Lauri, if I had money, I'd fly you and you're lovely family down here to attend. Anakin, you could do a monologue beforehand, kinda like a eulogy. We may name our firstborn Keegan, cause he thinks it's a good name for a girl. Not that I'm expecting now, nor could I have been (yes, I am afflicted with virginitus unvenereal diseasus, or pollo con riz for the Latin illiterate). Forgive me, for I am excited. I had to throw a customer out today. I said, 'Please leave, before I have a bobby escort you out.' It was, at this point, that I said 'execute you', in place of 'escort you'. Ah, true love. It gives you that quishy, Gritty Kitty-between-the-toes feeling.

keegan Thu Jan 4 20:22:12 1996
Hi, Anakin! Thanks for visiting my page. Maybe I should figure out how to do one of those "you are the ___ visitor to visit this page" doohickeys. Oh, well. Not tonight...
Hope all is well!
Lauri

Anakin O'Hara Thu Jan 4 18:40:37 1996
Congatulations Shelley, and mazeltov. Lauri, I made a visit to your homepage and I must say that it is really impressive, when I get a computer, hopefully an IBM Aptiva, I'll be able to use E-Mail, but here at the library it is not available. Ciao, Anakin.

keegan again Thu Jan 4 13:42:14 1996
Oh yeah- Congrats, Shelley! Drop me a line and tell me all about it!

keegan Thu Jan 4 13:39:46 1996
Hey, Draven! Welcome back! Dreaming of a garden, eh? Gardening is the religion of my family in Maine and I proudly carry on that tradition. I found broccoli really fun to grow. It looks kind of other-worldly if you let the stuff go to seed.
While I'm here, does anyone out there tape Harlan's commentary on Sci-fi Buzz? The only reason I ever watch the show is for Harlan and since the time changed to Fridays, I find I am seldom home to watch it. Answer me here, or visit my homepage and drop me email (find the URL in my previous post).
Thanks!

Draven Wed Jan 3 22:44:01 1996
Hi. It's good to see everyone back. I'm getting engaged. Right now, I'm looking through a catalogue for plants. I'm growing several flowers, but I would really rather have some herbs and some tomatoes and fruits. What do you guys thinks? Peaches, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, kiwi, mushrooms, watermelon, grapes (four varieties), raspberries, cherries, apples, oranges or tangerines? I am at a loss. Mmm, I'm not really a kiwi person, so that's kind of out.
Hope everyone's holiday went well. I've been at friends'. I'm going to a convention here the weekend of the MLK holiday, the weekend after this one. I'm kind of excited. I really can't afford it right now, but I need to take a holiday from all of this. Not you guys, just stuff. Hey, Rick and Lauri, you guys could e-mail me!!!! Especially you, Rick. I know you're busy, but you could say HI. Great, now I'm going to get something that looks like this:
"from: webmaster@harlanellison.com
to: driddle@cdc.net

Hi."

Sylphen says hi. She's not at school, yet (classes start Monday). So she doesn't have access to a computer right now.
Do you guys have any suggestions for picking up some extra cash, aside from giving blood?

I've babbled enough.

Much love,
Shelley

Wed Jan 3 19:14:10 1996
Good, I hope you get your own website!

Anakin O'Hara Wed Jan 3 19:10:58 1996
Ok, thanks Rick, but like you said, I'm not going to spam, I'll just mention it once in a blue moon. Oh, also can you please give me some information about DragonCon 96, when the information is available, also wish me luck, I sent in my entry for The L.Ron Hubbard, Writers of the Future Contest, I'm siked. Ciao Anakin

Rick (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Wed Jan 3 17:42:50 1996
Hey, this is a chat board...as long as you aren't abusive of others and don't spam, I'm probably not going to complain.

My New Year's Resolution is to do whatever the hell I want - I kinda feel the same way about those resolutions as Harlan does about Xmas - that is, that we should strive to better ourselves all the time, not just make an effort at the start of the year. That having been said, I would REALLY like to get some of my book reviews done and get a firmer booklist online. Oh, and win the Powerball lottery...

keegan Wed Jan 3 17:32:11 1996
If anyone's interested, my husband and I spent this snowy day working on our family homepage. Check it out at http://www.lightlink.com/keegan/index.htm

Y'all come on by now, y'hear?
Lauri

Anakin O'Hara Tue Jan 2 18:50:00 1996
My New Year's Resolution is to give up meat for good, and not to say anything about S.W. on this board, I have another place for that, the local coffee shop.

me again Tue Jan 2 16:26:17 1996
Ooops, sorry the post below takes up so much space. In the future, I will try to use return more judiciously.

curator-
Thanks! You probably just saved my marriage. :) Seriously, though, something's wrong with my clock so my man needs to show me how to fix it. I have a thing about time. Must be a musician thing.....

Checked the book review and I think my New Year's Resolution is to give up stuff like candy bars and booze so I can afford the darn thing. It looks to be well worth the expenditure of my hard earned pennies.

Any other resolutions out there in Webderland? It can be stupid or serious, but go ahead...post it here. Please use words you could let your sainted momma see....(and Rick, if this is too off topic, feel free to discourage response with prose or the ol' webmeister nuke. I'm just trying to start a conversation here, but I'm not clear if that's really what you intended for this board. Clarify, maybe?)

Later on kids!
Lauri

Curator Tue Jan 2 15:37:01 1996
Your clock was right, Keegan - Webderland is run in Central Standard Time, so the ball drops a little later here.

Until I get the link online, there's a review of Ellison's _City on the Edge of Forever_ on the Sci-Fi Weekly site (http://www.mordor.com/sfw/)... Hope everyone had a great holiday season and I hope 1996 will be as good to Webderland as 1995 was!

keegan Tue Jan 2 10:04:08 1996
Hi Sylphen! Welcome back! (and, Jeez, I thought I would be first but the clock was wrong on my computer. Gotta get my husband the hack to fix that!) See ya 'round.

Sun Dec 31 00:55:30 1995
Hello? Is anyone out there?

Anakin O'Hara Sat Dec 30 09:58:29 1995
Harlan made a surprise appearance last night on the Science Fiction Channel's Sci-Fi Buzz, there is also a computer program called A Dream a Nightmare Dreams, with H.R. Geiger artwork and a short story by Harlan, I saw a preview of it, it looks pretty cool. Well, pour out the champagne, beer, soda, coffee, whatever, and toast out the new year! 1995 was good, but let's hope that 1996, doesn't stink as much. Have a happy new year! Anakin.

Anakin O'Hara Fri Dec 29 14:56:27 1995
Well, I was not named after a movie character, I was born in 1972. I never saw A Boy and His Dog, but I have seen City on the Edge of Forever, my favorite Star Trek episode. Thank God, I have the Sci-Fi Channel now, I hope there's going to be an Ellison Special on soon. Ciao, Anakin.

Scott Fri Dec 29 14:35:00 1995
Wah. I've been dissed in bad French.

Fri Dec 29 12:58:16 1995
Transdusez ces mots dan francais, buddy: Vous avez le merde dans la place de la tete!

Scott Jennings (wirehead@mail.snider.net) Fri Dec 29 10:06:37 1995
Last I recall, Harlan thought "A Boy and His Dog" was pretty bitchin', but then I suspect he would say that of any story of his that was made into a feature motion picture. He didn't disassociate himself from it or anything, which is always a good sign.

Personally I found it kind of useless... Don Johnson couldn't act his way out of a sack, and the sexual element, although pretty high for Hollywood was toned waaaay down. Then again I preferred the original version of Blade Runner, so sue me.

And lastly, as a service to la curator, who doesn't speak French:

*** the wirehead translation service *******
I should want time for you yield/make you mad for me, but, I am always a (pouvre?) woman (or, it is a woman (pouvre?)... I forget) You are the apple of the eye. Ah... my heart is too large for you... We have always the page of the great writer of the world, Mister Harlan. We have always the letters and the time I am [on the] telephone with you. I think I am too saccharine... ah, well...

(Rick's a-gonna kill me for this one. Hee hee hee...)

Fri Dec 29 02:35:54 1995
So, Anakin, my name means, 'beautiful maiden who assists at pagan ceremonies'. Yes, a pregnant friend and I looked that one up.
Rick, my love slave (just to be mean to Sylphen), I have two questions, so stop smirking at my stupid joke. What does Harlan think about the end results of the films, The Oscar (available through order for an estimated price of $14.99 at your local Blockbuster outlet) and A Boy and His Dog (selling for $14.98, usually in stock, next to A Clockwork Orange($19.99) and the director's cut of Blade Runner (also $19.99)...gee, can you guys tell I was at work today? Better than a coffee shop, eh, Sylphen?
Also, I'm buying a Best Of... Lenny Bruce video (retail value $14.99, now yours for $4.99) because Sylph tells me that Harlan actually wrote for that guy. Tres coiable, non? Chouette, mon amour, je dis...
And a message to the curator:
Je voudrais le temps pour vous render vous folle a moi, mais, je suis seulement une pouvre femme (ou, c'est 'une femme pouvre'...j'ai oublie)..Vous etes la pomme de les yeux. Ah...ma coeur est trop grande pour toi..Nous avons toujours la page de le grand ecrivain de le monde, Monsieur Harlan. Nous avons toujours les lettres et le temps j'ai telephone a vous. Je pense je suis trop sucre..ah, well...

Anakin O'Hara Thu Dec 28 18:46:28 1995
PILCH: I am 100% woman, ok. My mother wanted to name me after Anais Nin, but my father wanted to name me Katlin after his mother, so they incorporated the name, Anakin Mara O'Hara. Ciao, Anakin.

I am truly a Net junkie! Away for the holidays but still checkin' in at the cyberbar called Wederland. Just dropping in to say "Howdy" and "boy am I glad I escaped the inlaws!" Unfortunately. I'm comin' at ya through Compuserve and it appears that something called "Mosaic" is involved. Page looks slightly different and I must say Netscape rules! Anyway-I've had some time to read and have been happily plodding through "Essential". Thank God for long academic breaks!
BTW, did anybody check Rick and the wired child on IRC or did that happen? And I'm anxiously awaiting poll results, Shelley. Thanks again for your tabulation!
Love to all!
Lauri

Scott (somewhere@else.org) Thu Dec 28 00:28:30 1995
Hey, Gene Simmons had some biting commentary on the frisson of the divisions between reality and comic fantasy. "Like, they put me in a comic and it was cool."

I'm still unclear on why they interviewed Harlan for the show. "Uh, we need to interview people. Someone go find Ellison, he usually says stuff that riles people up."

Someday they may say that about *me*. (All I hear now is "Why is the CD library down?")

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Wed Dec 27 23:05:07 1995
I saw Harlan on the Stan Lee biography too, and all I can say is "They cut some of Harlan's comments to show more of a guy from KISS?!?"...

And Bud, welcome. Your URL doesn't seem to work although enter.net was legit. I'd love to get a copy of your archives to put in an appropriate place here.

I am away from home for the holidays but I have just finished creating a page with the official Harlan Ellison booklist and am working on my first review/synopsis (of the stories in Shatterday). I should have these online this weekend or shortly after. Another gent was also kind enough to send me some new pictures, and I will be revamping the gallery this weekend as well...

Just joined the party and if I hadn't read back about a month I'd just lurk but you seem like a friendly bunch of folks. I downloaded a couple of years worth of comments off of Genie and A** (we dare not speak it's name)earlier this year. I'm an archivist by nature. If you read thru this stuff in one protracted setting (I'm talking about the textual equivalent of Harlan's total litarary output) you start to think that half the contributors have had religeous epiphanies and the rest should find a 12 step program instead of bothering this nice fellow from Painesville who's just trying to make an honest living. "Why can't we all just get along?" Indeed. At any rate , great place you've got here and I promise not to pee in the pool. Does anybody know if Harlan has any personal appearance commitments East of the Mississippi for 96? Also, being a completist does anybody have any fan APA or early men's magazine Harlan material they would be willing to sell. I am also looking for OSU alumni to get hold of Sundial material. If this part gets edited as want add stuff I understand. Take care folks and don't do anything you can't spell. Barney/HERC#1

By the way, to anyone interested, and I know that is not very many of you, I'm going to send the results of the Great, Wonderful, Webderland Poll shortly. PLEASE, if you haven't sent anything, please do!!!!!!! I can hear the crickets chirping...

Don't forget, that e-mail is DRIDDLE@cdc.net. Operators are standing by..

Confidential to Sylphen:
Let's pick a place and have this out. Would you like me to waste my time beating you into a pulp, or would you just quietly go away. I know you're not getting e-mail now, so I am sending this as an open letter to you. By the way, I've figured out who you are. I know you know the guy who runs my online service. I know that's how you intercepted my confirmation number at the scifi channel board. I also know that's how you did a few other things. By the way, I now also know EVERYTHING about you. You can thank a person of your acquaintance we both apparently know at your university. I know where you live, how to get there, your phone number, your SS number, what year you are at UTC, how your grades are, the car you drive, your licence plate number, etc. If you don't believe me, I will send that info to you. Ciao.

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Tue Dec 26 15:18:28 1995
I checked out the Sci-Fi channel board. Yes, they are talking about me there. No, I don't know why. And some joker there is pretending to be me, signing their name "RickWyattt". Great.

As for Dream Corridors, information on the continuance of it is on my News page.

Finally, I had a great Christmas and got my Net connection working at my Mom's house. I'm glad to see everyone behaved in my absence...

Anakin O'Hara Tue Dec 26 14:03:12 1995
Now that Christmas has come and gone, we can now relax and get back to being ourselves, my Christmas was small and quiet, me, dad, my sister, her boyfriend, and my cat. I usually open my presents early because my sister had work on Christmas Day, but my Christmas turned out to be ok. Misterg, thank you so much, it was very enlightening, I don't have E-Mail yet, but when I get it, I'll let you know. One life, furnished in Early Ellison... Mon Dec 25 00:11:47 1995
Um, you guys should try out the SciFi Channel Buzz Board. Underneath Authors, I think, there is an Author listed as being Rick Wyatt. Is that the guy that runs the Website? I hate to sound stupid, well, ignorant at least. Mr. Wyatt, if that's you, I didn't know you were a famous author. I should have know those, cause you like, keep in touch with Harlan an' stuff.
Oh, I hope you get the girl in the end, Rick.

keegan Sun Dec 24 23:58:38 1995
Well, it's truly here, so MERRY CHRISTMAS to all assorted and sundry folk in Webderland! Special wishes to Draven and Anakin for your goodwill and love (Lawd knows there ain't enough of that!) and I hope Santa is EXTRA good to you, Rick, because after all, without you there'd be no Webderland. If you think the second round of Christmas wishes from me is off-topic or excessive, blame it on my effusive spirit (or blame it on the extra glass of Merlot between church services). Anyway, have a good time all. Though I'll be parted from my computer, you are all close in my heart.
Pax-
Lauri

misterg (gburkman@erinet.com) Sun Dec 24 19:58:36 1995
A quick Merry Christmas to all the denizens of Webderland. I have been reading Ellison's work for nigh on 30 years or so, and am glad to see that so many people are equally influenced by his work. Anakin, don't let the buzzards get too close; your spirit is refreshing, and I enjoy reading your comments. If you would ever like to talk about acting, feel free to email me (I've been involved with my community theaters now for better than 10 yrs), or come look for me on IRC, usually on dal.net, but sometimes on qnet. And to Rick--don't let'em faze ya, you're doing a tremendous job here, and most of us appreciate it. :)

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Sun Dec 24 01:41:40 1995
Okay, look, folks. Someone has sent someone else an e-mail message and attached MY return e-mail to it, saying all kinds of ugly things. If you get an e-mail from me out of the blue, PLEASE reply to me to verify I sent it. I don't want anyone else getting hurt.

Also, a comment that appeared to come from me on this page about summarily destroying romantic stuff was NOT from me. However, unless you would like them to be public for some reason I would prefer any such missives be sent via e-mail. If you prefer your anonymity, I understand, though.

Scott Jennings (wirehead@mail.snider.net) Sun Dec 24 00:24:39 1995
Rick's home for the holidays this weekend, and I'm throwing a Thank-Baud-It's-Not-Christmas-Any-More Tuesday night which he had *better* show up to. Anyway, we are a very wired household in the wirehead residence (at least two computers running a net connection at any given moment) it won't be too much trouble to make this puppy even more interactive than it already is...

So if you can get on IRC (EFNet), try checking in on the #Webderland channel Tuesday night after 7p Central.

IRC'ing during a party -- are we geeks or what? (It beats my other entertainment planned -- watching Doom lag)

Happy Christmas/Hanukah..I wish you all very well!!
Especially good wishes and love to Rick...:(

keegan Sat Dec 23 16:06:15 1995
And a Merry Christmas to you, too, Anakin! And to everyone else in Webderland, for that matter. Earlier this year, I told Rick that I hoped to be "hearthside with Harlan by Christmas" and Rick delivered with his great work and care for these pages. I now have plenty of HE to entertain me as I sip the ol' bourbon. Hope everyone enjoys a well deserved REST. Check ya in the New Year!
Lauri

Anakin O'Hara Sat Dec 23 14:20:25 1995
Merry Christmas, well it's almost here, but I won't be back until Tuesday, so I like to wish everyone a peaceful holiday. Ciao, Anakin.

Seth Johnson (sjohns14@students.wisc.edu) Fri Dec 22 22:10:16 1995
According to an ad in this week's Comic Buyer's Guide(#1154), Harlan will be a special guest at this year's Chicago Comicon, June 21-23, 1996. No, not the Guest of Honor--Harlan was GoH two years ago. This year's GoH is Will Eisner, creator of 'The Spirit' and many other fine works of comic art. In any case, for those of you who live in the Midwest, this will be a rare chance to meet the man in person. Don't miss out! I'll be there. . .

Anakin O'Hara Fri Dec 22 12:48:19 1995
I think A&E should do a biography on Harlan. Anakin.

I looked around but I couldn't find signs of Ellimasturbation anywhere. Guess the FAQ was wrong...

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Thu Dec 21 23:30:02 1995
Please check the news late tonight for information on Harlan's appearance on A&E's biography of Stan Lee. Also please consider helping out with the ERB park mentioned there.

keegan (keegan@lightlink.com) Thu Dec 21 21:43:37 1995
Okay, here's a question: Did Harlan have to go to Hebrew School or was his family more "culturally" Jewish and religiously free? Just curious....

Seth Johnson (sjohns14@students.wisc.edu) Thu Dec 21 18:20:13 1995
I'm going to leave an ad in the want ads section as well, but I thought I'd post it here as well: I'm looking for a copy of Harlan's appearance on the Tom Snyder show last spring(?) so as I can a) watch it, and b) verify quotes from it that I received through a secondhand source. So if anyone has a copy (and I'm guessing it would be on videotape, although I suppose it would be kinda cool to see it on 35mm Panoramic Widescreen Dolby Surround Sound if you gots that. In any case, if you have the interview on video, film, or hand-carved granite reproduction, email me and let me know; I'd cough up for copying and/or S&H costs.

Anakin O'Hara Thu Dec 21 14:00:50 1995
I'm back, Hi Keegan, did you get the bad snowstorm too? It wasn't too bad, but I was really bored. Oh, I have good news for Harlan's home city of Cleveland, Ohio, there is a rumor that our hockey team the Hartford Whalers may be moving to Cleveland, Ohio. Does Harlan like sports?

keegan Tue Dec 19 14:35:19 1995
Hey, Anakin! I have a close nurturing friend who also happens to be Jewish. She calls herself "my Jewish mother". I call her "Barb" and she is married to my mentor and friend Steve (who's a jazz guitarist and college professor). Barbara actually knew who Harlan Ellison is when I first mentioned him to her years ago. She had read a few stories and liked them, but isn't a collector or ravenously hungry webderhead. :)
Anyway, I gave her the copy of _Fantasy and Science Fiction_ with Harlan's Chanukah story in it. She was delighted! The Yiddish just brought it all to life for her. For me,too, thanks to Barb's tutelage and Harlan's little glossary that comes with "Mom"(p227 Essential Ellison). For the first time, I am celebrating Chanukah in my home (I am a Christian, but I recognize and embrace the Jewish roots of my tradition). I have celebrated at the homes of others in the past. With approval and assistance from many friends, we now say the prayers and light the menorah. Harlan's story was sort of like a nod of approval from the almighty (though, ya know, I could be completely mistaken. Oh well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.)

a little holiday gift tip from
lauri

Anakin O'Hara Tue Dec 19 12:03:12 1995
One more thing before I leave, I saw that picture of Harlan and Susan, and I must say that they are the youngest looking couple I've ever seen, that is one nice picture, they probably don't have kids, that's why they're so young looking.

Anakin O'Hara Tue Dec 19 11:53:22 1995
Hi Keegan, how's everything? Yiddish is a great language, my best friend is Jewish and I learn everything from her, she's like a second mother to me. Does Harlan celebrate Christmas too, because my Jewish friend, she celebrates both holidays and I think that's terrific. If there's more information about DragonCon 96, please tell me after the hectic holidays, I'll be away for a few days, my state is going to get pummeled by a huge snowstorm. Ciao, Anakin.

And Rick, there's nothing to dealing with stuff like that. Just tell her (I'm assuming here it is a female) how you feel about that..uh, nevermind. I don't want this turning into The Love Direction or whatever.

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Mon Dec 18 21:28:09 1995
Yiddish is a language. Many Jewish people speak Yiddish. Cool? And on that subject, Harlan asked me last night to wish everyone on here a Happy Chanukah.

I also asked him about cars - and I'm sorry, but he loves them. Harlan's current car is a 1989 Geo Metro, which he has driven hard for 6 years without a hint of trouble. It gets 53 miles to the gallon, which is why he drives it and why he did the commercials for Geo (they gave him the car). Harlan also owns a 1947 Packard. HE used to own a '67 Camaro, a beautiful car which he turned over on the interstate one fine day, and he used to own two gun-metal blue Austin Healeys and race for their factory team. He did this until he wiped out racing and plowed into the haybales and decided That Was About Enough of That.

Harlan's favorite TV shows include 60 Minutes and the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries on PBS. He also loved People's Court, and his all-time favorite TV show was It's a Living (the one about the LA waitresses with Ann Jillian, originally Making a Living).

Harlan has no pets - his last dog was Ahbhu, and there is an essay about Ahbhu in "Deathbird". He says you don't go and buy a new best friend when one dies, so he didn't see the point in getting a new dog. He describes himself as a "dog widower".

Finally, thank you very much for the touching words about me, and all I can say is that I think I'm a much better person on the Net than I am in real life. Sorry to make light of it, but I am not very good at handling people liking me - I need more practice, I guess.

keegan Mon Dec 18 15:50:29 1995
Hey, I'm not trying to cause a war here (Anakin's sentiment was well meant and well received), but isn't Yiddish a language and not an ethnic group? People can SPEAK Yiddish but they can't BE Yiddish, right? Just trying to learn something new today so's that when I finally DO meet HE I won't say something completely stupid. Anyone care to clear this up? BTW, hi Anakin!
Later on Webderland!
Lauri

Mon Dec 18 14:44:12 1995
I might as well come out and say it. Rick, you're a really cool guy. I wish I lived in Atlanta. If I did, I would send you boxes of first edition Ellisons, pay REM and the INDIGO GIRLS to play at your home. I would have a limousine pick you to take you to work and I would send you the best love poetry. I would leave little gifts lying around for you to find and I would paint roses on your door. If I could, I would woo you and try to be Miss Right (or, in your case, Miss Write). I would be there so you wouldn't lie awake at night, wondering why your so "abysmally lonely " in such a big town. I would share everything with you and make you laugh and make you in awe of what love is. But, I think I'm not quite sure enough of myself to do those things. If I were a better person, I would try, but I'm not sure. Rick, you are a bright star as sure as the moon. You are a wealth of joy and humor and wit. You are a sea of life and a whisper of love. The more I see you through this page, the more my heart gets tugs to you. If only I were sure of myself, I'd have red candles burning brightly when you got home. I'd be there to care for you and be your guiding force. But, I am unsure.

Anakin O'Hara Mon Dec 18 14:23:04 1995
Welcome Veronica. I like to wish Happy Chanukah to the Yiddish residents of the page, Mazeltov! I loved Harlan's commentary on the dirty angels of censorship in Dream Corridor Five. The man has a point, we shouldn't turn everything over to the parents, censoring some stuff is ok, but let's not blow anything out of sync, ok? People must express themselves and if we didn't have talented brilliant human beings like Harlan or Asmiov, we might as well be robots. I hope I didn't offend anybody. Peace, Anakin.

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Sun Dec 17 14:33:35 1995
Work and Xmas keep intruding and it looks like I won't have any major updates here until after the holidays. I promise to redouble my efforts in January, and get some quotes and reviews online.

Meanwhile, keep up the good work...it's nice to see a sense of community developing here.

Happy Chanukah to all those of Judaic extraction in Webderland (and to those who aren't, too, if it won't offend ya). Just bought my first copy EVER of _Fantasy and Science Fiction_ for Harlan's story. I was not disappointed! A good holiday read indeed.

BTW, welcome to the online world, Veronica! Thanks for saying such nice things. Have a wonderful holiday and tell us your email address soon! Lauri

Anakin O'Hara Sat Dec 16 11:18:28 1995
Sorry Sylphen, cool name though, I was just worried that I might get it wrong. I loved all the ideas for the Simpson's episodes, maybe Harlan will write one, who knows. I also consider Harlan to be an inspiration to me, I love the way he expresses himself in his writing, he is very cutting edge and that's what I truly admire about him. Write later, Anakin.

Fri Dec 15 12:17:29 1995
HI. I really like Harlan Ellison. I agree with about everything he says. I really like your page, Rick. Lauri, I think you're cool, and yes, you do have a life.
Well, I just wanted to say that everybody here is great and this is like an ongoing mini-con, non? I'm so glad I got "online" for Chanukah. Well, the first thing I did was do a search for Harlan. This is by far the best page devoted to him. By the way, I live just a few miles South of Atlanta, Rick. Maybe we can get together for something. Hope you go to Dragon this year, it'll be cool to meet you in person. Give my love to Harlan. Is he married? If so, tell that poor woman I say, HOWDY!!!
Lots of best wishes and happy holy-days,
Veronica Mabley who cannot find her e-mail address just yet.
By the way, Draven, (don't I know you? aren't you the British lady who came to Emory to talk about primates?)
here's my poll response:

6. best mag. anything Star Wars or Star Trek and the Mag of SciFi and Fan

Good ideas, Seth! Maybe near the end of the show they could cut away to a shot of the cartoonists (or maybe it should be the writers?) slaving over the episode. A 'toon HE bursts through the door and the "camera" focuses on his glowering expression. The cartoonists (also 'toons, of course) gasp and cower away, leaving 'toon Groening on his knees groveling incoherently before DA MAN (whom he assumes, with good reason, is bent on revenge). Shot cuts back to Harlan who holds the snarl for a beat, then relaxes and says, "Hi, I'm Harlan Ellison," and, (the other writers will provide brilliant dialogue here) it turns out that Harlan is really a very civil and intelligent guy.

Uh...Yeah. Right. :)

Seth Johnson (sjohns14@students.wisc.edu) Wed Dec 13 21:02:38 1995
Hmmmm....Ellison as a basis for a Simpsons episode. . . I started out thinking about which story they should do, but then thought that, being the Simpsons, it would probably end up digressing and riffing from story to story anyway. Some potential riffs:

"Maggie is Five"--everyone realizes that Maggie hasn't aged a day since the series began, what---ten years ago?

Other stories I could see being done:
"S.R.O."--Krusty hires a new group of sidekicks ("Sideshow Bird", "Sideshow Snail-Thing")that will work for less than SAG scale. . . .
"I Have No Mouth, and I Must Eat"--Homer, after getting dental work and having his jaw wired shut is required to defend his title as Biggest Eater at the company picnic

I'd go on, but if Harlan ever sees this, I'm afraid of what he may do to me--nobody likes to see their children may fun of, even if it is satire. It's a fun thing to think about, though. . . .

keegan Wed Dec 13 20:41:40 1995
Hey!
Anybody else out there in Webderland a Simpsons or Life in Hell freak (don't be shy-I know you're out there)? Wouldn't ya love to see Matt "Rhymes-with-Raining" Groening take a crack at spoofing one of Unca Harlan's (gah-that's the first time I've ever referred to him as such....leaves me hincty) stories? Or do you think that's just about the dumbest thing you ever heard in your whole life? Our esteemed pollster informs me that Groening lists HE as one of his major influences. Whether Harlan would go for it or Groening would dare is questionable, but maybe not completely outside the realm of possibility.
I hope y'all don't find this too off-topic. I'm just curious if the thought ever crossed any minds besides my own. IMNERHO, The Simpsons is one of the more "Harlanesque" shows on currently on network tv.

Shutting up now. :)

I keep thinking about buying the "I Have No Mouth" CD game, but then I remember that bad acid trip where I *lived* it for some undetermined length of time... maybe I'll wait awhile, like 50 years or so.

Why the hell IS/WAS/AM Harlan so disturbing? To be honest I haven't read him in a good ten years but I was severely shattered like a glass goblin and was caught in his star-spangled future and certainly learned that there is no direction home.

It's not that he's a sick puppy, or arrogant. It's something akin to Burroughs I think: he's got an innate grasp of human ugliness. It becomes inescapable. But, we can't pay attention to the truth *all the time*. As one bio-robot to the next, I must say: "Keep up the good work!"

Rick (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Wed Dec 13 10:42:49 1995
Gee, and here I thought Lionel Richie would never hit my page...

Let's play nice, folks. This is a chat board for visitors to Webderland, and as long as it doesn't get too ugly a little off-topic discussion is perfectly okay.

If anyone feels like they are being harassed, please let me know and I will deal with the matter. Otherwise, go for it. For my part, my thoughts about Star Wars tend to fall more in line with Joseph Campbell than Harlan Ellison. All flashy f/x and muppets aside, it is a strong myth with a message about technology that I think even Unca Harlan would appreciate. However, I could give a rat's ass if Luke marries Mara Jade or not. I've read a lot of those books and aside from a couple of okay Zahn ones they're pretty much cage-liner material...

Rick (not the curator) Tue Dec 12 23:14:49 1995

Graham, if Harlan read that, he would poke your eyes out. be nice to Anakin. Harlan may not like STAR WARS, but some of us intelligent readers do. It is to us what The Shadow or Mr hoppy goes to town was to him. It may not be perfect science fiction, but it is entertaining. Nuff said.

Is Anakin really your name, or is it just another cheesy Snore Wars referent? Let's face it these movies are more than a dozen years old, and while they still look damn good, I just don't see what the big deal is. If special effects are all that matters then Stargate must be a masterpiece of American cinema. I'm not saying any of these movies stunk, I'm just saying move on, folks! We're all here to bow our heads in praise of Unca' Harlan, aren't we?
Love the menu, Rick. How about serving "Gopher in the Jelly"?

Piece of news for any Ellison surfers in the Syracuse, NY area: Borders bookstore in the Carousel Mall had some Ellison for Sale when last I was there (a week or two ago?). Mephisto in Onyx, The Essential Ellison, and maybe some others were all there for the taking (and had I more bread and a greater sense of urgency, believe me, I would've bought 'em and they WOULDN'T be there). GO FORTH AND SHOP!
(mostly I'm posting this to see if the board is, in fact, working. I figured it wouldn't hurt to include some possibly-useful info and a pitch to BUY ELLISON!) :)

I just finished adding graphics and other niceties to the fake intro screen at http://www.snider.net/ellison.

Anakin, answers to your questions about Dream Corridor and Slippage can be found on the News page. I don't have any more recent information than that, but I should have another update before Christmas.

"Rough Boys" was adapted in Issue #3 of Dream Corridor.

And unfortunately, I think Harlan likes cars. REALLY likes them. The other questions on here I can't answer, but will pass them on...

Good afternoon, what is the news on Slippage? Also, I am glad to hear that Harlan is making appearances, too bad I can't see him, I'm in Connecticut, and it will be until Hell freezes over for Hartford, Connecticut to have a Science Fiction Convention, but there is one thing I did promise to Harlan, I will be at Dragon-Con 96, if he is going to be there, I'd really like to see him. Ciao, Anakin

It says this in the back of THE ESSENTIAL ELLISON:

"Telltale Tics and Tremors" originally appeared in HARLAN ELLISON: WRITING, a column on writing in UNEARTH magazine; copyright 1977 by Harlan Ellison. Does anyone know if that was a one-time column or a regular column of his? And if it was a regular column, where's the rest of them? and are they (forgive me) any good? I'd like to track them down if they're worth tracking down.

Rick-
Thanks so much for putting "last update" info at the top of the homepage. Remember the Webderland Quick-menu for the Impatient or Experienced? Well, I guess I'm just both. :)

Just put a news entry up about HE making appearances soon in the LA/SF area.

I also have been working insane hours lately, and my e-mail is fuller than Santa's, but I'll get to all of it this weekend.

Keegan: Don't worry, I don't have a car. Wasn't Rough Boys in one of The Dream Corridor Series, I don't know, because my friend has them. If Harlan ever drove, I think he would drive a Saturn. Hey are there any other Harlan admirers who love Star Wars? Well talk later, Ciao, Anakin.

Hello to all-

Glad to hear the poll's going well, Shell! Anakin- I loved "SRO" and have not yet made the acquaintance of "Rough Boys".

Why am I here in Webderland today? Well, because my "real" life is a minor drag and I admit it: I'm escapin'. Latest news from chez Keegan is that my car threw its timing chain and, shoot, where the hell is Ernest when you need intercession with the machine god?
Enough of my problems. My questions follow: Does Harlan drive? What does he drive? What is his general opinion of automobliles (and automobile manufacturers)? God, how I want to hear he HATES 'em!!!!! But he has pitched a few cars (the Geo I think, any others?), and written about cars, so maybe his opinion is more balanced than mine at this point.
Happy Motoring!

Hi, everyone!
Uhm, the poll has been going great. I've had about twenty responses so far. If some of you sent stuff and didn't get a "thank You" not from me, I must have just gotten your mail returned or something, so, THANK YOU A LOT!
Shelley

ps To the person (and you know who you are) who sent me the list of THIRTY-SIX musicians you like, TWENTY writers, TWENTY-ONE tv serials, and TWENTY-NINE favourite movies, I just took the first three of each, in the interest of space. Sorry.

KEEGAN: Don't worry, I know how you feel, I went to school in my Darth Vader Pajamas, I had to spend half the day in the infirmary, until my dad came and brought a change of clothes. Have you ever read Harlan's SRO, that one was really cool, how about Rough Boys, I have all Dream Corridors, except the Dream Corridor Special, I'm getting it from Dark Horse. Ciao, Anakin.

I dug Leia, too. God, how she handled that laser rifle thingie! Unfortunately, I discovered the hard way that the power was decidedly NOT in the hair. In fifth grade, I wore my hair in her dual-doughnut fashion one day and was laughed to tears (Maybe the fact that I had only the skinniest-ass hair ya ever saw heightened the comedy). This has nothing to do with Harlan, but since Rick was confessin' his most embarassing moment in da rants, thought I'd cough up one of my own. Oh, yeah- if you picture me with glasses and a face full o'zits, you'll probably laugh, too. :)

Anakin O'Hara (None Yet.) Tue Dec 5 14:20:41 1995
FAERIE: You were not ranting, you proved a point.

Anakin O'Hara (None Yet.) Tue Dec 5 14:00:28 1995
FAERIE: Thank you about the information on Harlan's Dream Corridor Six. I admire Princess Leia too, I think she's the brains, I don't care for whiny little damsels in distress either, they seem to stereotype women as weak and inferior. Have you every read The Timothy Zahn Trilogy, I love Mara Jade, Luke should marry her, Luke needs a tough lady with a heart of gold, like his sister, hey, who was the one who turned Luke away from the dark side, it was Leia, that's how powerful she is. Now back to Harlan, whom I admire and adore for his honesty, he is also a brilliant mind. Bye for now.

Rick Wyatt (webmaster@harlanellison.com) Mon Dec 4 23:40:46 1995
Stuff seems to be going through to Shelley now. So send in your poll! I just did so tonite.

Will ask Harlan about TV shows and pets, and yes, Sylphen I got your re-directed e-mail.

I will put a link up on Wed or Thur when the last issue is archived but for right now you may want to check out the latest issue of Sci-Fi weekly (http://www.mordor.com/sfw/index.html). It has an interview with Harlan.

Sorry, but that's it!
