Re: Wathcya watchin'?
Just watched The Straight Story. One of my all time favourite movies. Directed by David Lynch and quite possibly one of the most touching, poignant and downright strange movies he has ever made. Its not weird like a lot of his work, just a tad odd, as it is about a guy riding a lawn mower across Americas heartland to visit his sick borther. Best of all though, its based on a true story.
Its a film I cannot recomemend highly enough, and I hope that some of you will take a chance on it. You will be pleasantly suprised and I promise, a little moist around the eye regions at some parts.

There you go Red. The film also deals with average people in a very sympathetic way.
You should check out Umberto D. The ending is sad as all get out, involving a cute little dog named Flag. I hate it when my mascara runs.

Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny, done by Rifftrax! That's Kevin Murphy, Mike Nelson and Bill Corbett. They sell downloadable riffs on new films on DVD, with instructions on how to sync the riffs with the movie. That would include Twilight, or other films you want riffed with extreme prejudice.
Then there are DVDs they sell of movies that are now in the public domain. They usually include two versions, riffed an un-riffed.
Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny. How to describe it? Well, if you want to know what the effect would be if you ate a whole line of peyote buttons and washed them down with tequila, but without killing any brain cells, this movie is a safe alternative. There's no plot to speak of, nor any coherent thought whatsoever.
Here's a sample (click on the tab that says 'sample' and prepare for the utter warping of reality):

The DVD includes the short Santa's Punch and Judy. Santa, an audience of children and a little of the old puppet ultraviolence. Guaranteed to scar a little tyke's psyche for life. Isn't it amazing how creepy Christmas movies can be?
It's all hilarious, of course. I laughed my ass off.

That actually is a hopeful list. Neil Postman always thought that the junk on television was less dangerous than the important stuff.

Now I really miss Keith Olbermann. Look towards the bottom:

Re: Wathcya watchin'?
Let’s make a list, a big one. Some of these shows topped the rating charts, some didn’t. Many won Emmy Awards, and many more were escapist fluff. But what they all have in common is some level of influence on the medium as it evolved into a cultural force and a very big business.Steve Evil wrote:What was the criteria?

Re: Wathcya watchin'?
While I like The Walking Dead, it only has been on the air for one season. It is ludicrous to have it listed as having any impact whatsoever. Having Buffy that low is a joke, it could legitimately be called one of the best and most influential shows of the 1990s.
Plus, any list of influential shows is incomplete without MANIMAL!!!!!

Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristrocratic forms. No gov't in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, gov't tends more and mroe to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class

Re: Wathcya watchin'?
Do not blaspheme against the wonder that was Manimal! If it weren't for the machinations of people like Noam Chomsky, the world would have seen Manimal in its full glory!!!! Alas, much like Cop Rock, it was cut down well before its prime.

Re: Wathcya watchin'?
I have to agree that Manimal was in fact complete and utter pish. Worst TV show ever. And it was completely pointless to the Nth degree. I even hated it as a kid, which takes some doing.
Personally I am watching Warehouse 13, which I absolutely adore. I keep hoping that Harlan's something or other is going to appear as an artifact in the show. That would make my day
