What the hell was so sophisticated about "The Flintstones"?

And "Family Guy" ain't nothing but a constant parade of pop culture references. It has none of "The Simpson's" social satire.

With McLuhan, I've heard it's best NOT to start with "Understanding Media". I've been told by a professor at the McLuhan center in Toronto it's better to start with "From Cliche to Archetype", and skip right to chapter 3.

I'll get around to it one of these days.

TV is getting worse. But it's always been bad.

Keep these thoughts in mind.

As to what killed the dinosaurs, it was probably a comet whacking the Yuccatan.

As to why, our youth, today seem speechless, that same comet bounced off the Yuccatan and smashed Denver. Like it or not, the United States is bilingual and you don't get to choose if Spanish is your second language.I majored in Chemistry at Uni, but the only thing that keeps ME employed is that I studied Spanish in college, so that I would have something to say on vacation.

However, there are more sinister forces at work. Since the publication of Strange Wine, two developments have plagued our lives. The Nation has become more conservative. If children do not speak, it is because free speech is a thing of the past. The Conservatives killed it along with what was left of the dinos. The Nation, finding themselves, obsolete in the face of new tech, has decided to pray themselves a living. To them, Free Speech is the Province of Satan.

Understand. Most people are not on these Boards. If they are not surfing the porn sites, and are left to wonder why their computers are infested with virus, then, they see the Computer as the instrument of Satan.

They are breeding. Their jobs have moved to the Third World. They are still breeding. Television might keep them occupied.

I am from Ohio. Ohio has turned into a Fundamentalist Wasteland. If you doubt that, I got into it with some tralk from Akron who took exception that I brought up the point, that she should not home-school her offspring, because she is ill-equipped to teach them physics. She demanded to know where I learned mine. I told her in High School, in Cincinnati. She, then, went on to say that high schools had no business teaching Physics, ad nauseum. It is a sad commentary. Ohio is the State of the Union that actually owns the Moon. It has Neil Armstrong's Footprints all over it.

According to some stats, African American kids watch more television then any other group, which kind of shows you the bad effects of Television.

There is great stuff on television, but it is better to take all this stuff in small morsels.

But, the people who gloat about turning off their tvs for good make me retch, as well. Sounds like the elitist stuff that the left get hack-sawed for.

Agreed, but the same can be said for books. (Science fiction in particular.) After all, the generation that grew up on Heinlein ended up reading New Wave, the generation that grew up on New Wave (us) ended up reading cyberpunk, and now Neuromancer is taught in most "progressive" HS Eng. Lit. classes.

The only question that remains, for both television AND literature (SF in particular), is why today's generation isn't getting something progressively BETTER than what we had, it only seems to be getting media and literature which are progressively WORSE.

Witness, TeeVee gives us "reality programming" that seems to exist solely to promulgate the culture of Social Darwinism, and literature (SF/F at least) gives us Harry Potter.

I grew up on Bernard Malamud, Kurt Vonnegut, and Salinger. What does that make me? A Neanderthal?

This is an old quote from this thread, but I felt compelled to throw in my two coppers. I'm child-free by choice. My guess about why most people have children is my guess about why most people do most of the things they do:

Because everybody else does.

I'm serious. One of the strongest drives in the human species, it seems, is the desire to be Normal. I don't claim to be free from it myself, although I am generally considered rather eccentric.

People who have children without even considering the possibility of choosing not to have children are in the majority, I think. If people stop and think about it seriously, some will choose to have them, and some will not.

Unfortunately, the ones intelligent enough to THINK about whether or not to replicate themselves seldom do and are the minority.

............if watching television reprograms you to be normal, and everyone wants to be normal, then the best thing you can be is as abnormal as possible. Yes, I watch the teat, but I have a big, unavoidable sign right above it. It's an altered quote from George Carlin: WARNING - YOU ARE ABOUT TO WATCH A PIECE OF SHIT. It keeps everything I see in its proper context.

I wonder I'm paranoid for thinking that the fundamentalist theocrats are attacking by air, land, and sea. Patrick Henry College in Virginia trains Christian home-schooled kids to be Congressional aides and aspiring politicians, so they can lead American government toward "Christian Principles." The Officers Christian Fellowship aims to turn the American military into "ambassadors for Christ in uniform."

"Let me make it clear. I would shed my last drop of blood to defend their right to hold that biblical worldview. They are absolutely entitled to believe that Anne Frank is burning in hell along with Dr. Seuss, Gandhi and Einstein," Mikey Weinstein says. "But I will not accept my government telling me who are the children of the greater God and who are the children of the lesser God. That's the difference. I will not defend -- I will fight them tooth and nail, and lay down a withering field of fire and leave sucking chest wounds -- if they engage the machinery of the state, which is what they're doing."

I heard about that, from the State that gave us Phil Donohue, Jerry Springer, Gloria Steinem, and Harlan Ellison, no less. Why does that look like Patrick Heinrich von dem Wiener Universit"at? The dinos are dead, and Ohio just went to hell.
