Well, the Brits have their share of crap - they can't seem to get enough of voyeuristic, exploitative "reality" shows - but the BBC still manages to deliver.

I confess I don't watch a whole lot of television. Doctor Who or course continues to be the engine of my existence. I got quite a lot out of BSG before it went all funny. I occasionally catch the odd episode of House or The West Wing or Boston Legal and find them reasonably smart and engaging. Everyone I know goes on about Game of Thrones. My parents loved 24, my brother adored Carnivale, a good friend of mine goes on about Dexter. I don't follow any of it too closely because I'm afraid to commit, but it tends to feed the brain more than anything Hollywood's pooping out nowadays.

That's not to say there aren't good movies - I saw The Fighter, A History of Violence, and The Pirates in an Adventure with the Scientists all within a week of each other - but any time I take a chance on another CGI superhero, or see another trailer for another reboot, remake, sequel, prequel,tie-in, take-off, adaptation, spoof, rom-com, sex-com, I want to shoot myself. It's not that TV is a panacea, but it does seem that someone somewhere is green-lighting intelligent scripts far more often than in tinsel-town.

Were you aware that The Pirates in an Adventure with the Scientists was renamed The Pirates! Band of Misfits on its release in the US? Apparently anything having to do with scientists is considered the kiss of death here. And of course the fact that the scientist was Charles Darwin might have had something to do with it.

Isn't it a shame when your whole culture can be summed up by the title of an animated film?

As Neil Postman always said, the good tv is what's dangerous, not the bad.

You have Dateline and 20/20, their love affair with crime stories and celebrity dreck. They are produced by the news division.

HEY, FUCKERS, THE AIRWAVES BELONG TO US. GIVE US REAL NEWS, DOCUMENTARIES, NOT USING OUR AIRWAVES FOR THIS SHIT!

Ah, I feel better.

Oh, I know THAT. But they have options that far exceed the monotonous landscape here: SHERLOCK and, as you mentioned, DOCTOR WHO.

I was not aware of it, and it really, really makes me sad.

The BBC, channel 4 did put out a documentary that was really controversial: That Israel uses the holocaust to extract favors from other countries and gadge sympathy. It had Finkelstein on as well as other Israeli historians uttering this. And this was on Holocaust rememberance day. Wow.

Does this documentary have a name, Frank? An airdate? Something by which it can be found?

Wonder how they hornswaggled Kissinger to be in it.

Talk about the banality of evil.

The doc was a good reason to rethink Elie Weisel.

Getting soft? No. Stopped caring. Blood pressure dropped 20 points.

BTW, you mis-attribute it to the BBC, when the Channel 4 in question is a completely different organization, and ignore filmmaker Paul Yule completely in the equation.
