Re: Wathcya watchin'?
Steve - Thanks for the heads-up - that one completely slipped under my radar, so I'm curious to see (especially given the low budget to high impact ratio).
Used the DVR to snag Welles' F For Fake off one of the cable channels the other night; haven't gotten to it yet, but it's been on my "get to it" list forever. It was nice to stumble across it in the listings.
And apparently my honey missed large chunks of the 1985 CBS revival of The Twilight Zone, so methinks I know where we're going when we wrap up with Farscape.

Steve - I just thanked you for an eight month old recommendation on page one of this thread. To help ease confusion. Because I was reading page one as the current page.
And now, to hang an 'Out of Order' sign on myself.

I'd love to see this: A discussion on violence in films--two of the guests would be Harlan and Quentin Tarantino. I'd give my crotch hairs to see this. Harlan and Tarantino would possibly strangle each other.

Re: Wathcya watchin'?
They both suffuse their works with violence, but to entirely different effect.
Unca Harlan depicts violence, I think, because the world is full of violence and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.
Tarantino uses violence, apparently, because he likes it.

just put Soylent Green in the player.
i haven't seen it 167 times yet, and it still doesn't get funnier every time i see it.

Academy Awards.
Anne Hathaway, better than expected.
James Franco, not.
The King's Speech got what it deserved with the lone exception of Geoffrey Rush, who wuz robbed.

Maybe the whitest awards ever.
Lawrence Fishburne was on the Smiley and West radio show and he talked about just how awful Hollywood is on race issues. Hollywood, you deal in the world of the paintbox. Reflect that in your fucking films.

Welll...except for the whole Tribute to Lena Horne thingy, of course...

Liberal guilt is chic. Gak.
Re: Wathcya watchin'?
What do you want Frank, a special award for Best Supporting Negro?
Tyler Perry don't seem to be hurting.
I saw BLACK SWAN. Sure a striking performance from Natalie Portman but the film itself is waaaaay overrated. And jeez what a cliche fest. Did anybody NOT see the ending coming a mile away?
Disappointed in Darren Aronofsky. He really got my attention with π and THE FOUNTAIN (although it seems only about five of us saw the latter) but now he's doing Cronenberg lite and his next project is a Marvel superhero movie (Wolverine).
Oh well.

I've only seen Pi which I really liked. I guess I should see a film or two he's made since that one.

"north by northwest" with commentary from lehman; wonderful. A close first to "the trouble with harry", "frenzy" and "the birds" for the hitchcock films i rewatch.

sweet, worth renting
as an example of the possibilities of low budget film, imo it bodes very well.
