Ezra's Wholesome American Music Thread

Postby Ezra Lb. » Sun Nov 22, 2009 8:28 pm

There seems a need for it. Not as a competitor to the previously established music threads but a companion. The boundaries seem pretty well sketched out. NOTE: The term "American" should be interpreted in the widest possible sense, i.e., not just North America.

Jackson Browne - How Long? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T_yURxa_6I

Daniel Lanois - Marie Claire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-yVssNkLYg

Bob Marley - I don't want to wait in vain for your love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u15rHU8w1HU
(yes I know)

Baden Powell - tristeza http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qiv47G_aN4c

Don't forget Elvis. Transformed hillbilly with black gospel leanings. Beyond his knuckle-dragging fans, he turned it out. One of the greatest singing voices in modern music history.

Great topic, Ezra. I'll keep my eye out for some of my favorites.

In the meantime, how about:

X - White Girl (Live From SXSW) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=507e6-8fMSI

Granted, they're often classified as a punk band, but their roots stretch deep in Johnny Cash and early country music and I think the "punk" moniker diminishes their accomplishments.

It is sad but every time I hear Johnny Cash's brilliant cover of "Hurt" I now flash back to this you tube clip of Kermit the Frog covering the song (NSFW):

You can thank me or curse me later
Governments, if they endure, always tend increasingly toward aristrocratic forms. No gov't in history has been known to evade this pattern. And as the aristocracy develops, gov't tends more and mroe to act exclusively in the interests of the ruling class
