Scientology Sucks at Photoshop

Postby Samuel John Klein » Wed May 15, 2013 11:33 pm

So, this last week, Scientology opened a new store here in Portland. Something in their "Ideal Org" line, which kicks everything up to a new level of something somehow.

The new Ideal Org Portland is in a historic structure on the corner of SW 3rd Avenue and Oak Street, downtown, called (no shit) the Sherlock Building. They just bought the whole thing up and now it's Scientology from the basement (where presumably the RPF bunks) all the way up to the roof line. Five-story entry atrium. No expense spared, &c, &c.

This is a signature event so even Little Davy Miscavige showed up to give the adorably tiny keynote address. Scientology, with its typical PR acumen, handled the thing with its usual aplomb. Even photoshopping in a crowd that wasn't there!

'Strew! Tony Ortega's blog has a good rundown of the whole thing here:http://tonyortega.org/2013/05/12/scientology-sunday-funnies-portland-is-now-cleared-on-to-the-rest-of-earth/.

And at the entry at http://tonyortega.org/2013/05/11/mark-bunker-removed-from-filming-site-at-portland-event/, someone named Mark Bunker (who has an entirely too-amusing though inscrutable habit of calling DaveM "Slappy") tries to viddy the event from a vantage point, but is hassled almost to the point he can't.

And here (http://www.mikerindersblog.org/scientology-photoshops-audience-for-miscavige-event/)is where Mike Rinder picked up on the crapass Photoshoppery. This particular commentator is notable because, until 2007, he was a particularly important Scientologist, having headed up the Office of Special Affairs at one time.

Fun for those of us who are religious-group watchers. Fun to be had!

Sam.
Losing my religion? Hell, that ship sailed long ago, skippy.

Well, at least we know where some DPRK marketing folks have gone.

Portland.

Oh. Ouch.

True. But Ouch.

Not one of them. Wasn't a Rajeneeshee, either.

Why does none of this surprise me?

Anyone read the recent book on the subject?

Actually there are two recent books! And embarrassment of riches obtain! Inside Scientology by Janet Reitman and Going Clear by Lawrence Wright. The old critical books are still the good ones, but the recent ones bring the story up to date very deftly, including some of the more recent imbroligos and notable blows (like Mike Rinder) and one of them, Reitman's book I think, diagnosis why the prosecution screwed the pooch when it came to the Lisa McPherson scandal.

Both really recommended. I also note that Jenna Miscavige Hill, Lil' Davy's own niece, raised in the Church, has blown and has written a book about it. I'm going to be looking forward to reading that.
