Tim, I think you are an excellent poet. You must be because I am in the blackest of black moods, and something in your writing moves me to reach out, across many miles. I am sorry I haven't reposted my poem yet, just yucky mood.

We can only control ourselves, yeah? I'm controlling myself to a more urbane setting. This has been a fun experiment for me. I wish it had lasted, but we've all read Utopian ficition, c'rect? Best of luck to the poets herein.

Folks,

Let me reiterate in the strongest possible terms: this thread has an exemption from snark. From rudeness. From abuse. Won't have it.

To that point I have removed Frank's post, but not Tim's heartfelt (and well written) reply.

Thank you.

Alright, let's get the ball rolling again. Here's one I wrote when another cancer death was announced. Cancer has touched my life just like most other people, having lost family and friends and a quarter-sized patch of skin from my left shoulder.

Cancer the Thief

Comes stealing in

To leave another hole

In the world.

Fuck Cancer.

Blood and chocolate

Fences and hornets

Car horns and heart beats

Little walkways and busy streets

Side way glances and looks of love

All those eyes look above.

A suggestion, Frank.

Steve made comments to you here that you have not responded to. Acknowledge Steve.

You hobnailed Tim's poetry. Apologize to Tim.

You've tried to co-opt this important forum. Apologize to those here who've made a serious, and brave effort.

And do it before you make another post here.

Another suggestion. If the first suggestion rankles you in any way, why not keep out?

Frank – Rick is right.
I’ve had people contact me via email saying that they think the idea of a poetry forum is a good idea, but they weren’t comfortable posting serious work that has emotional meaning because they expect it to be belittled.

Your name was mentioned.

It’s not my forum, but Rick’s suggestions would go a long way to ease tensions. I realize that you use snark and humor to deal with emotional topics. I do that myself sometimes. I see that you immerse yourself in the problems and horrors of the world, rapes in the Congo and innocent Palestinian’s being murdered. So, in that context, what is our problem with a casual comment from you toward our personal attempts at art? Our problem is that it hurts; it’s hard to have the courage to reveal your emotions to the world.

I’m not asking you to cut down on the casual snarky bits.
I’m not asking you to only do it every once in a while.
I’m not asking you to limit it to just once a year.

I’m asking you to not do it at all in the poetry forum.

Can you do that for me Frank?
Thanks!

On a completely separate topic –
I’ve avoided bring this up because of all of the cancer death recently, but I just went through the same thing myself. Five weeks ago I had a sore spot develop on the right side of my neck below my ear, which within a week blew up into a painful lump. The CAT scan revealed a necrotic tumor in my right parotid gland. The biopsy (painful) was inconclusive. So until 6:30 PM last night when I woke up from surgery I wasn’t sure or not if I had lymphoma type cancer.

They removed my parotid gland yesterday during the surgery and did a frozen sample analysis while I was still under anesthesia – it came back “not cancerous”. If it had been cancer they would have removed all of the lymph glands in my right neck, a "partial neck dissection". So, tonight I’m feeling pretty good, even though the right side of my face has no feeling and I have a drain tube coming out from behind my right ear. I have to dump out the container every eight hours – it’s REALLY GROSS!

I’m glad it was the better outcome. Even though my poetry can seem kinda suicidal, I really do want to live.

Tim

For Tim

I am thankful for each of my friends
Who escape death's cold hand
I know if they can do it so can I
I don't know who runs the universe
But, I thank them for another day
To get to know him a bit better.

In point of fact, I've already asked for this and expect it from all participants, which is why Frank's note was deleted.

Not sure who sent you the notes, Tim, but continually rehashing the issue after it's been handled is itself detracting from the topic. I'd love it if the creative juices were expended in poetic contributions more than spreading the sort of arguments we see in the other threads.

Last time I'm saying this: Spill Yer Guts has the same exemptions I grant the Depression thread. No snark, no one liners, no arguments or attacks.

Slings and Arrows

Slings and Arrows
Arrows and Slings
beware the temptation
to keep focused narrow
on outrage, rather than
recollection
of memories
those very fortunes
bring.

little rules

The soapbar must be pushed
way back
into the soapholder
lest it fall into our tub

And this light in our bedroom closet
one slow
and then one sharp
yank
successfully turns that bastard on

In this old apartment
we turn the bathroom doorknob
to the left

and that rusty lock on our front door
you push up on that key
and then left
to gain entry

If you decide you no longer care
about these little rules
then your insanity is almost complete
and the nails of the devil will scrape upon
your stairs
with deadly feet

so
what?

was there a big rule?

quick!
quick!
be quick!

hurry…

Tim, sorry if I offended. Was trying to be funny. Sorry about that. I don't do snark to hurt people, it's just a part of curmudgeon behavior--Harlan does it, Gore Vidal did it, I do it. Sorry, bud, you are a sweet guy.

My last bit was not snark but an attempt at poetry. I will be good here, I will.

Keeney, no need to pile on.

Raven, shake my hand, friend

You almost nailed it, Frank.

I'll give you full credit for effort.

Thanks.
