HE on Christmas

Postby Tony » Thu Nov 29, 2012 10:24 am

Hi!

Does anyone know if HE has ever written anything on/about Christmas? Essay, fiction, etc.?

Thanks

TONY: Had this handy, actually...

Non-Fiction
* "No Offense Intended, But Fuck Xmas!"
* "Oh Dear, He's Not Going To Do Xmas Again, Is He?"
(both in THE HARLAN ELLISON HORNBOOK)

Fiction
* "Go Toward the Light" (in SLIPPAGE - not Christmas, but Chanukah-themed)
* "The Outpost Undiscovered By Tourists" (in STALKING THE NIGHTMARE)
* "Santa Claus vs. S.P.I.D.E.R." (in THE BEAST THAT SHOUTED 'LOVE'...)

Bonus: Script and essay:
* The Deadly “Nackles” Affair
* Nackles (script)
(both in SLIPPAGE)

He also has an Essay called Fuck Christmas, I forget where I saw it though

I want to say An Edge In My Voice, but I'm not too sure.

Harlan was Hitchens before Hitchens.

Actually, Frank - no.

Harlan made his differentiation pretty clear back in 2006 when Hans (whoever Hans was) posited (much as you have here):
Hans
- Saturday, November 18 2006 11:19:54

Hi! What is your opinion on Michael Eisner (and his minions) banning Walt Disney's immortal "Song of the South" animated film classic.

Happy Thanksgiving! & Merry Christmas!

Of course the vegetarians and animal supremacists say Thanksgiving is prejudicial against them and atheists like Harlan (like in his lurid essay Fuck X-Mas) say the same thing about Christmas...(emphasis mine - fd)
To which Harlan replied:
HARLAN ELLISON
- Saturday, November 18 2006 20:42:31

DEAR HANS

If you're going to take a swipe at me, at least try to do it on the facts, NOT on corrupting what is written:

I have NEVER said "fuck Christmas."

What I said, repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly, was

FUCK XMAS.

Big difference. Xmas is a commercial cesspool of greed and mendacity; Christmas is a day of worship and rememberance of a fine philosopher. If you cannot perceive the difference, you and I have nothing to discuss. But if...your wits are so addled, or your field of perception so attenuated that you cannot perceive the point a clear-speaking essayist is trying to make...I look on you with pity, as I would on any illiterate.

I have NEVER said, "fuck Christmas."

Get it straight, bozo, or buzz off.

Righteously, Harlan Ellison

Which is a far cry from how Hitchens expressed his sentiment about the holiday, which was like a tight carpet bombing of the entire month of December, commercial and spiritual alike.

Hey Doug

This is going to be one of the few times I'm gonna be sticking up for Frank.

You are busting the wrong person's chops over the FUCK Christmas statement. I was the one who made that.

But, thanks for the reminder. I was here when that post you referred to was made.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
Regardless of whether it was Christmas or Xmas, did we find out where that essay is printed?
I guess the question now could become are there any other holidays HE has written about? Grandparent's Day?

Thanks
Tony

Lori - Oh no - I was firmly directed at Frank for the 'Hitchens before Hitchens' comment, which was off-base. Harlan draws a distinction that allows for recognizing Christmas for the birth of Jesus for those who go in for that (versus the commercial aspect of Xmas), where Hitchens tosses the entire month of December, commercial or spiritual, on the pyre. It just happened that Harlan's comment overlapped with what you'd posted.

Tony, see Finder Doug's post above. He lists all the collections where the works can be found. That's why he called...

...DA-DA-DAAAAA! The Finder.

Hey, don't mind me, I'm just quietly celebrating Muharram. Good thing I'm not Shi'a and don't go in for self-flagellation on Ashura. Deeply ashamed about the bombings in Pakistan. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn? And Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it, and Happy Hannukah, and Joyous Solstice for those Pagans amongst us too!

Dearest, you don't know me, so how the hell can you be so damned sure of what I like.

I agree with what Harlan said in the Essay. Go read it if you really want to know what I believe on this issue.

By the time I'd figured this out, it was too late for me to remove my post.... Please forgive me for the rare blonde moment!

I forgot all about that Harlan comment. That is great.
