Despite all odds, there may be some indication that my mental age will soon approach six years.

Surely you know this one. (From memory, as best I can recall it:)

When I was one, I was just begun.
When I was new, I was nearly new.
When I was three, I was barely me.
When I was four, I was not much more.
When I was five, I was almost alive,
But now I am six, and I'm clever as clever.
So I think I'll stay six now for ever and ever.

-- A.A. Milne
War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off. - Karl Kraus
