Quote of the day from retired colonel Andrew Bacevich:

"'We the People' need to understand: it's not longer our army; it hasn't been for years; it's theirs and they intend to keep it. The American military belongs to Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright, to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, to Hilary Clinton and Robert Gates. Civilian leaders will continue to employ the military as they see fit. If Americans do not like the way the army is used, they should reclaim it, resuscitating the tradition of the citizen-soldier and reasserting the connection between citizenship and military service. … [A]s long at the tradition of the citizen-soldier remains moribund, reversing the militarization of U.S. foreign policy will be a pipe dream."

Corrupt elites running our society have always been the problem. Our men in the field are dupes and victims.

All very well and good, the idea of the citizen soldier, but that relied on the draft, which fell into total disrepute during Vietnam. While the draft may be the answer, personally I see that as an unconstitutional violation of personal liberty---involuntary servitude. It's a conundrum, I have no answer, but when we abandoned the draft we paved the way for a professional standing army---as my father likes to say, a Praetorian Guard. There could be trouble.

Frank, we used to be lovers, but now you're a stranger. Why won't you talk to me anymore? Here I am finally thinkin' I've figured out your stance, and you go on about project paperclip. Do you ever read my posts? You never answer my questions! (Jap treatment of PoWs? As if there were any point. . .)

A fella can't be ignored forever!

I always tend to learn these things the hard way. :(

Seriously though, what is it you want me to do? What would a return to grace entail in your eyes?

(Would it involve the forgiveness of Jap prison guards?)

And here I was thinkin' I'd made a major concession. . .

Nicely cryptic, but yet another evasion.

This is what I do not get about Dennis Miller--he thinks the election results are that a majority of Americans don't want to pull their own weight, so they want Obama to hand them free government stuff. First off, we pay taxes, second, what we really want is Wall Street to pull its weight.

The Hostess guys are going to get a bonus, even though they drove their business into bankruptcy, how fucking lame is that? Fuckingfuckingfuckster.

Another thing that is funny is communists made people go into work camps, while the right here think communists want people to ride the couch. Irony my name is Miller.

Not quite. They think socialists want people to ride the couch. Communists, they think, want everyone to work, only not for themselves but for everyone else, which in the end means nobody. But work! (Otherwise you have free time for ideas that might undo the Glorious Revolution.)

Part of this is a rather sad clinging to one of the defining myths of American exceptionalism, that of the Self Made Man, which say (among other things) that if you fail it is entirely your fault. They are not willing to look at systemic problems that slot people into the equivalent of destinies out of which most can only escape by buying a winning Lotto ticket. People like Dennis Miller are doing fine, so why fuck with a system that pays him for being an insensitive ass? But it's not just him---blue collar folks buy into that myth even more than the 3-piece-suit crowd, because they want so desperately to believe they are exceptional and that they'll Make It. That and fixing a system even the people running it don't fully understand is a bit daunting.

Mark, do me a favor, I think his show is on right now or later, call the show and take him on--do it Mark, I want to hear ya? Mark or Barber or somebody. Not Rob, he wouldn't get past the call screener.

I remember calling Michael Medved and he had on Ann Coulter and I used Harlan's line about her being like Isla Koch. Ann was tongue tied, oddly.

Hate to disappoint you, Frank, but I got passed the screener six times in the last year-and-a-half - with Randi Rhodes and, once, with Thom Hartmann.
