Gwyn, I just recently joined in and logged on, and I'm slowly making my way through the posts. I just read yours, and good lord, your story sounds like mine. I read Ellison Wonderland when I was 12, and shortly thereafter began to write Harlan long rambling letters about his writing, my life, my des...

Memorable Dinners

Name: Sara Slaymaker Source: unca20090104.htm The most memorable dinners I've had were when my extended family got together. I have had some interesting people in my family: my grandfather was a statesman and professor at Princeton; my grandmother was witty and acerbic and loved telling stories; my...

Name: Sara Slaymaker Source: unca20090104.htm Harlan, I've been reading your stuff since I was 12 (that's 41 years, darlin'. I can't fuckin' believe it either), and have read most of what you've recommended over the years - Hugo, Borges and Bester to name a few - and so far it's about 90% to the go...

Re: Mucking Stalls

Alan - yes, I have to say, as much as I hate really cold weather (and why does she live in Vermont, he asks? It's complicated...), those winter mornings are my favorites. It's so quiet, and somehow even more lovely than during the summer. And I really love Vermont summers...

Name: Sara Slaymaker Source: unca20090104.htm You're right, Rob, I was a little thrown by your syntax ("I know there are many factors, including region and terrain (Europe had climates in more east-west longitudes; Americas, more north-south); another was the use of horses, long before the Spanish ...

Yes! I also loved Whimper of Whipped Dogs . I lived in center city Philadelphia when I was in my 20's, and loved it at first - but finally got freaked out by the succession of young men hanging out on the fire escape outside my bedroom window. I was almost old enough to be aware of the Kitty Genoves...

Lori, I am happy to post as often as I can. I am a strong believer in balance. Deathbird Stories is and probably will remain my favorite anthology. I remember reading the "caution" in the beginning, about not reading without taking a break between stories - I am a fast reader and tend to d...

Of course I voted for Bernie - I think the only Vermonters who didn't were the Flatlanders who moved up here in the past couple of years and didn't understand. I was a Flatlander once, too, but I acclimatized. Bernie spends a great deal of time touching base with his constituents, walking the street...

Honestly, it's been long enough, and so much has happened since, that I can't remember if I ever posted before. I used to READ the boards regularly, but life intruded... I'm here now, though, and will try to contribute with some regularity. I figure if Harlan doesn't scare me, Frank won't either, bu...

Yes, she's back....

Greetings from the Northern Kingdom! I've been a fan of Harlan's for 41 years - and just realized it's been that long. Good Lord! Anyway, my brother handed me a dog-eared copy of Ellison Wonderland when I was 12 (yes, that makes me 53 - again, good lord!), and I was hooked. I've met Harlan three tim...
