Re: Sounds of Evil: the Metal Thread

Found a great little metal tune on No Disc , the second soundtrack album from the too-brief Cowboy Bebop animated series -- "LIVE in Baghdad." The music for the series was spearheaded by Yoko Kanno, but individual tracks were recorded by various musicians in Paris, Tokyo, & New York (t...

Re: Depression

Oh, yeh, & melatonin tabs are a great mild sedative when I've got the "runaway thoughts" problem. No notable side-effects, better than warm milk (which I loathe except to wash down fresh tollhouse cookies -- not a great treat before bedtime), more convenient than dark-meat turkey.

Re: Depression

A proper thunderstorm seems to cheer me up, or at least relax me. Rich sounds & pretty lights, like God's own heavy-metal show, but I suspect the increased ozone has something to do with it. Some years back, in Minneapolis, I started a relationship with a lovely woman, only to have her move to C...

Re: Depression

I'm not truly "depressed," more a classic melancholic. I can readily enjoy the good stuff of life, but the bad stuff seems to linger -- hell, I feel badly about every cat I've had for the past 30 years. A common error that "normal" people make is that they can "jolly" m...

Re: You probably REALLY REALLY want to read this one. Really.

I know a woman who went on to become Assistant Coroner down in some big Florida city. She's kinda misanthropic, & said she wanted to become a veterinarian but her grades weren't good enough, so she had to settle for med school.

Re: Webderland Wine Seminar

Retsina is definitely one of them "acquired tastes." Most of 'em that I've got near smelled like some sort of varnish to me, so there's no way I could've actually sipped -- do enough woodworking & the reflex is burned in. But I have the same reaction to most gins & more than a few ...

Re: Webderland Wine Seminar

While I appreciate just about every standard red wine, I find myself enjoying stuff that's labelled "Gamay Beaujolais." Despite sounding French, it's a mid-century California variant on pinot noir grapes, & the GB name was apparently banned by the Feds (!!!) in 2007. Still, there's a f...

Re: You probably really want to read this one

Yah, I'm glad Barber's put up with it this long. Amazed, really. And as has been said, it's far from the worst. Jan, I certainly understand your viewpoint, & that's why I'm glad you have a chunk of the Webderland to focus on the "serious Ellison" stuff. I simply don't believe that this...

Re: I am about to be a total douchebag

Well, IMNSHO, Ellison isn't particularly angry. He's passionate. He also lacks a lot of the self-censorship usually called "niceness" or something like. He feels crap, & he feels is deeply & immediately, & he's not so good at packing it down, so like a cupful of water hitting a...

Re: Sounds of Evil: the Metal Thread

I watched the "Oxegen 2010" festival on cable. Supposedly "around 150 acts," but most of those chosen for the TV were a bunch of whiny wankers -- the ancient Fatboy Slim kicked their asses with a freakin' laptop. Wish they'd at least showed Earth Wind & Fire or Echo & the...

Nah, broke up a few years ago, though the singer's still around. I got "Loco" on a K-Tel compilation ( ) .

Re: Could be any time now.

Barber: while Ouja left a hole in my current life, it's led back to other stuff. See, my parents had a marriage that could best be desribed as "strained." I'm the eldest, & they divorced when I was 25 -- only then did they discover their friendship. But as a result I was a bit estrange...

Re: Could be any time now.

My beloved cat Ouja died last week. Not to compare directly to your situation, sir, but in Ouja's last day at home I watched him fading in the same spot my Dad died in, 2005. I've been fending off flashbacks since. Every death of a good person diminishes me. Other than that, any words I can offer wo...

Re: Monologues: yay or nay?

Christopher Walken, Pulp Fiction -- only way it coulda been better is in a sinngle unbroken take. Rutger Hauer, Blade Runner -- makes me cry every time. In both cases, it's the driven-over-the-edge madness that makes it work for me. But mis-handled monologues are legion. I guess I've read too many a...
