Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

I cut Obama a whole LOT of slack, as I knew I'd likely have to when I voted for him. Politics is a highballing freight train -- even if you know you've gone down the wrong route, & that the bridge ahead is dangerous, slamming the brakes on is a guaranteed disaster. There's an old s/f story I bar...

Re: SCIENCE VS RELIGION

Being a pacifist doesn't mean ya can't get pissed off on occasion. In my opinion, Gandhi provoked violence in a highly passive-aggressive manner, but he then used these incidents as a mirror to point up the inherent dysfunction of the lassez faire . Buddhist monks regularly got into some rath...

Re: The "Great Recession": Almost over, or just beginning?

We're on the Titanic . Do we claw for a seat on a boat, or party our faces off? The middle ground is quickly eroding. The "housing crisis" isn't over yet. A lot of those houses were bought cheap by amateur speculators, & now they're beginning to puddle up. Basic economics: if there's t...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

I once heard that the United States was funding Israel with taxpayer money to the tune of $13,000,000 per day. I started calling Israel "Biosphere Zero." Then the Afghanistan invasion. Then Iraq. If a nation needs that much long-term outside life-support to exist, can it be said to be viab...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

I like the idea of a national flat tax on all goods & services. At the same time, I've been cynically certain for decades that it'd take milliseconds before the exceptions (pronounced "loopholes") would start to come into play. As a guy who runs a couple of tiny little businesses (gros...

Re: EARTHQUAKE 2011: Washington shakes

Last month, a Wingnut told me that the recurring recession is Obama's fault, "because it happened on his watch!!" I replied, "So, 9/11...?" I'm waiting for Michelle Bachman to start quacking about how this is God's judgment against Obama & Congress. Then I can tell her toadie...

Re: Sounds of Evil: the Metal Thread

Oh, I'm actually a moderate fan of Snider. I saw the vids for I Wanna Rock & Leader of the Pack exactly once each on MTV, & still remember 'em in great detail. They put out good r-n-r, yet didn't take the culture too seriously. The band captured something good on their Christmas album -- &qu...

Re: Sounds of Evil: the Metal Thread

Just received the first two CDs of a series (four to date, far as I can tell) of The Blackest Album: The Industrial Tribute to Metallica . I discovered "industrial" a decade ago, & it delights me by combining elements of metal & techno. In this series are various groups that will p...

Re: Depression

Back in the 1980s, I subscribed to IASFM. I made the comment at the time that, about every second or third issue, there'd be a story (usually at least a novella) that could be summed up as "Oh, well, I'm dying, & so is the Earth. How ironic." It was like half-arsed J.G. Ballard, & ...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

Heck, I'm still peeved over Iran/Contra. All that verifiable high treason, yet Reagan stayed in office & even Ollie North never did proper prison time. Many of the bright lights of that administration went on to assist Bush 1 & 2.

Heck -- almost forgot.

Frank, I actually own a couple of HP Lovecraft LPs. But here's the track that leapt out at me & is still my favorite -- doesn't sound like anything else they ever recorded:

Re: Ezra's Wholesome American Music Thread

Speaking of the "James Bond" franchise, there's a largely unfounded story that Patrick McGoohan was offered the role, but (hoping for a resurrection of Danger Man ) suggested his unemployed friend Sean Connery. Years later, he was offered the role again, but (in the midst of The Prisoner )...

Re: Depression

SJK -- know what ya mean. I used to joke that I --must-- be an alien, as I don't seem to be well-adapted to either the "normal" diurnal activity or the 24-hour cycle. While I do enjoy a sunny day (& the full-spectrum light behind me does seem to help my moods), I can readily drag mysel...

Re: SCIENCE VS RELIGION

The recent trope of the "Tea Party" types seems to be, "It's all about the taxes!!" If so, then why can't they go ten freakin' words without circling back to the "red meat" issues of God, guns, & gay marriage?? I'd take 'em more seriously if they had more black athe...
