I had a chance to talk to Harlan briefly at MiniCon, and was in a group where he was talking with other Webderlanders a number of other times. I had heard all of the horror stories about how snippy he was and he did not suffer fools gladly and you know what? He was great. Harlan is, to paraphrase Ha...

Lovecraft Homages

Rudiger, you have some excellent choices on that list, including a few from one of my favorite Lovecraft homage collections, Cthulhu 2000. That also included a wonderful story by Thomas Ligotti (Last Feat of the Harlequin )and The Barrens by F Paul Wilson. Barrens might be my favorite story in the c...

I am finishing up The Silmarillion for about the 20th time. Finished up re-reading One Day in September last week and needed something a little lighter after reading about the Munich Massacre, the unconscionable actions of the German government and the hit squad the Israelis sent after the terrorist...

Not Winona

Duane, buddy, I gotta tell you that is not Winona Ryder. Ryder's hair is much shorter and I do not think she has ever been a redhead (her real hair color is blonde but she dyes it black).

Whoever she is, she is absolutely stunning.

She has eyes?

Duane,

I have no idea what color her eyes are, as those are not the anatomical parts that I am focused upon.

I do love redheads, which is probably why I married one.

OK, I gotta know, who is she?

Actually, Duane, I think your new avatar is very nice.

Additional entries

DVG, I like your list, you have a couple of people on there that I did not think people would include, like Thomas Ligotti and Shirley Jackson. He is still fairly early in his career, but I think Neil Gaiman's name probably should be on this list, as he has written some amazing stories in a short pe...

Don't be so sure on Karl

Frank, While you, me, Joe Wilson, and a lot of others would love to see Rove behind bars don't expect it to happen. Yes, I know that Fitzgerald had him and his lawyer in his office for most of Friday afternoon, and I am have heard the same rumors Truthdig reported. However, even if he is indicted, d...

Eric, just to clarify, I did not email you directly with my issues with your posting because you did not put a return email on your postings. When you sent me your obnoxious email, I did not hesitate to respond. Believe me, Eric, I am not someone who craves an audience, I just found it rude of you t...

There is only one point that Eric made, and that is to highlight that much of Harlan's work is out of print. Ezra does correctly note that both of his most recent collections are still in print, as are the two editions of the Essential Ellison, but that leaves gaps in large portions of his career. S...

Not a problem starting the thread, it seemed like a number of people wanted to talk about this, other than Frank Church (or Myra Fleeney, or whatever his true name is) I would agree with you that they were trying to play with the concept of superheroes but I think it was handled clumsily. The subjec...

Congrats

David, congrats on your being cast in "the Scottish play". I need to check to see what Shakespeare in the Park productions are scheduled here in the Twin Cities. Just saw the final production of Hamlet over at the Guthrie theater and it prompted me to re-read the original play (and while I...

Infinite Crisis (major spoilers for those who have not read)

This series really bothered me because it had so much potential. I was really enjoying it up until the final issue which was just a complete letdown. I greatly enjoyed George Perez's covers and artwork within the comic. This guy has been doing great stuff for 2 decades at least (I became aware of hi...

The story reads more like a Lovecraftian tale, but the general feeling of dread pervading the story is certainly evocative of Poe. It is certainly a dark tale, and George Gibree plays a rather unfortunate role in the story. His fate reaffirms that sometimes life just ain't fair. However, despite tha...

#27 - On the Slab

[See ANGRY CANDY and DREAM CORRIDOR Vol. 2 - Mod.] I have to admit I am a little uneasy posting a new topic on this board, populated by so many who know far more about Harlan's works than me but this is one of my favorite stories by Harlan that may be under the radar for others. The opening scene es...
