Unsung HE

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070528.htm I'm not sure if this one qualifies as underappreciated or whatever, but I've always been particularly fond of "Ernest And The Machine God." Man, that story does it all. Many years ago, when I was trying to figure out how to *do* stuff like that, I t...

I just heard that Kurt Vonnegut has died. I find this terrifically depressing. I remember reading an interview years ago in which he talked of HIS depression and suicidal impulses. RIP. He was 84.

Fennish sans spandex. I don't know what it means, but I'm sure I must require it once in a while.

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070528.htm Norwescon took place just a few miles from my home, so I slipped over there on Saturday to visit with friends. I also attended one panel about short stories. Steven Barnes spoke eloquently and told a very touching story about Harlan. Later I had a l...

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070528.htm HARLAN, have your read Brian Miller's front page piece in the Seattle Weekly? "A Sci-Fi(sic)Legend Declares War On Scrappy Local Publisher..." It sounds like he interviewed you, but he still got some stuff wrong. For example the idea that you use an...

The Library Journal Guy

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070528.htm Just out of curiosity I searched the LJ reviewer's name but didn't come up with much. He seems to do the occasional review but doesn't otherwise have a web presence. Well, there's always somebody who's unhappy with what you do, I guess. I haven't pu...

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070325.htm Steve, are you thinking of the "shears" scene in the hospital? If so, I agree that it's one of the scariest things on film. The suspense is magnificently built. And something about the way she (it) kind of *stalks* across the frame at the end. No bl...

This debate reminds me of why I love the purity of writing fiction. It's good or it's not so good, but it's yours. And when it's REALLY good it beats everything.

I Know Dick

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070325.htm I read "CONFESSIONS OF A CRAP ARTIST" a couple of months ago and thought it was very, very good. However, not all of PKD's novels are as successful. I tend to like the early books and the late period books the best. My favorite "straight" science fi...

No worries, Big H. You just stay healthy, and I'll endeavor to do the same. And yes: it's passing odd. Not to mention a joy.

REPLY TO Todd Cassel

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070325.htm Actually it's HARLAN who keeps referring to my advanced age. Sheesh, talk about the kettle... I think Asimov's will be calling me a "New writer" for years to come, though they also tag me as "popular" from time to time. To answer your question, my f...

REPLY TO Chuck Messer

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20070325.htm Just call me Jack. I have a few pretensions of dignity, but my salutation isn't among them. Let's see, I had a story in the February Asimov's, so you missed that one, though you could probably still come by a copy. There's a story in the June issue,...
