Not to confuse the issue any further, but I do usually talk to Van Gelder a little bit when I see him at a convention. So it's perfectly possible...

Memory Is A Tricky Thing

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20060606.htm HARLAN: That was some OTHER Jack Skillingstead. Our encounter(s) took place at the Westin in Seattle about two years ago. Temp

HARLAN, yes I wouldn't miss it for anything. Will be arriving on Thursday. By the way, I think it was the hallway outside the SFWA suite where we talked. I had a bottle of beer in my hand, kind of taking the bar with me. No televisions, though.

Alfred Bester

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20060316.htm Have lately been re-reading some of Bester's novels. Tonight, in the middle of THE DEMOLISHED MAN, a bit of biographical flotsam drifted into my mind. Is it true that he left his estate to his bartender, a man who apparently didn't remember him?

Deathbird

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20060316.htm Speaking of DEATHBIRD STORIES, isn't there a new non-bookclub edition due out soon? I can't find anything online about it but have a vague recollection of it being discussed here. I came across my old mass market paperback version last night and bec...

Trunk Tales

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20060316.htm MICHAEL: "I'm sure you could think of any number of reasons why someone might write a book and NOT submit it for publication" This is true as far as it goes. STAN, I think you have to put such worries out of your mind and give them your best.

HARLAN, Looking forward to seeing you. By the way: "You've been flyin' yo collar, homes!" I'm WAY too young to know what that means. Ha!

Stan, what makes you think your age has anything to do with it? How would an editor even know your age if you didn't tell him?

Response to Todd re: Nebulas

Name: Jack Skillingstead
Source: unca20060316.htm
Todd, the Nebulas are open to everyone. If you're a fan of Harlan's you will probably enjoy yourself. I'm very much looking forward to it myself. The Nebulas are lower key than other sf conventions, but for me at least that's appealing.

Harlan's Post

Name: Jack Skillingstead Source: unca20060316.htm I think this is kind of beautiful: "That was all long before Susan came along, but thereafter, we both spent some time with Charlie's kid, Carrie, who I guess I love (in an absentee landlord sort of way) the way I loved my cousin Charlie. Who is now...
