Re: Wathcya watchin'?

Chuck, that sounds like a fantastic way to see PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, still the best of the Phatom films, in my view.

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

I tried not to quote too much because I was in fact concerned about the propriety of doing so; but.now I almost wish I'd quoted the section previous to the one I excerpted, because the Pavilion is talking about THE GREAT DICTATOR, which Rosenbaum discusses in that earlier section. I happen to sharpl...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Rick, the entire text of Ron Rosenbaum's Afterward to his book was published in the July 10th issue of the LA REVIEW OF BOOKS, and is available on its website here: https://lareviewofbooks.org/essay/hitler-continued-afterword-updated-edition-explaining-hitler-search-origins-evil Does it really matte...

GODWIN'S LAW Godwin’s Law is something that’s come into prominence with debate about the devolution of discourse on websites. For those unfamiliar, Godwin’s Law has now entered the Oxford English Dictionary, but here, since it is an Internet phenomenon, is a somewhat more expansive (and net-native)...

Re: SCIENCE VS RELIGION

Mark, you might add that the power of the myth of Jesus is not only that he beat death, but by accepting him and following him you will beat death, too. Well, at least you'll beat an eternity burning in hell. If you judt say yes to Jesus, so the, promotional material goes, your "soul" will...

Re: Wathcya watchin'?

Years ago I saw the original silent NOSFERATU at a summer film festival in the Cathedral of St. John Divine. The music was provided on the cathedral's organ by one of the masters of playing music for silent films -- his name escapes me at the moment. But it was a little eerie to be watching this tal...

I've already tried that tactic along with those results.

Re: Harlan Ellison's Watching.....

The original ending of FATAL ATTRACTION, included as a "bonus" on recent DVDs of the film, showed the character played by Glenn Close committing suidie at the end -- she slashes her wrists in her bathroom while opera music is played on the soundtrack. Apparently preview audiences hated the...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

NBC pulled its reporter from Gaza. I feel the lobby is controlling the narrative. NBC news is saying something different Barber. So did the Israel lobby suddenly stop controlling the narrative at NBC the minute they said something you like? Either NBC is controlled by the Israel lobby or they're no...

"Hamas told NBC they do not embed with Civilians [sic]." Well, if Hamas says so, how can anyone not believe them? After all, they told NBC they don't! "even John Kerry is flustered" -- even John Kerry. Who would have guessed? John Kerry is renowned for saying such good things abo...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/2/22/RMMBRRMMBR1963.jpg I just obtained a copy of this Charles Beaumont nonfiction book, published in 1963. It certainly must be the first, or one of the first, of the nostalgia books, a genre which didn't really hit big until the early seventies. (Jules Feiffer's w...
