Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

All this clever political talk about "saving face" and "credibility" and "leaving the blame" to x, y, or z makes me want to throw up. Scores of civilians are being massacred in Syria every day while everyone else is busy trying to look concerned while doing nada. Frank,...

Nason, he was not an economics expert but a foreign policy one.

By the same logic, Chomsky is not a foreign policy expert but a linguistics one.

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

As a public intellectual, he first led the "Japan revisionists" who critiqued American neoliberal economics with Japan as a model; their arguments faded from view as the Japanese economy stagnated in the mid-90s and beyond. -- From the Wikipedia entry on Chalmers Johnson. Yet another Amer...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

I really sense a love match developing between Frank and Lori, with a wedding in the near future and Noam Chomsky officiating. Too bad Gore Vidal's not alive to be godfather to the happy couple's first child. But as the late Mr. Vidal was fond of lamenting: "Always a godfather....never a god.&q...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

I thought I made it very clear that my criticisms were directed at Castro and the goverment of Cuba, not the Cuban people.

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Frank -- the article said that Daniels tried to ban the Zinn book from Indiana's educational libraries and classrooms , not from bookstores or regular public libraries or private citizens' possession. And he didn't succeed. That itself demonstrates the vast difference between Anerica and Cuba. Just ...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Getting rid of Saddam Hussein was the best thing that ever happened to the.Kurds. The've got their own flourishing semi-independent state in the north now, and they're doing just fine, thank you. And we made it happen. Yeah, us. The United States. With no help from Professor Chomping-at-the-bit-sky.

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Frank -- are we supposed to be surprised that Noam Chomsky would pose for a picture with Castro, or that the late Venezuelan strongman Chavez would be in a photo reading (or appear to be reading) a book by Chomsky? Birds of a feather poop on America together. I give the 4 "C"s -- Castro, C...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Good point, Mark. Cuba may have relaxed some of its anti-gay activities in recent years, but for a very long time they persecuted gays to the point where countless gay Cubans fled to Miami any way they could. Batista may have harrassed and arrested gays, but there was still a flourishing gay subcult...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Still arguing about Cuba, at this late date? Oh, man, what's left to argue about? Castro was a dictator -- his boyhood idols were Franco and Mussolini, and he followed in their footsteps, only learning from their mistakes. Thus he was even more repressive, more brutal to his political opponents -- a...

HEMINGWAY AND GELLHORN

Just saw the a DVD of the 2012 HBO film HEMINGWAY AND GELLHORN, directed by Phil (THE RIGHT STUFF, HENRY AND JUNE, UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING) Kaufman. Spectacular performance by Nicole Kidman as Martha Gellhorn. It unmistakably is more sympathetic to Gellhorn than Hem, but those of you who haven...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

I don't feel I've been insulted and I don't feel that I've insulted or impugned anyone. But I am reminded of the (one) time I was in the audience for the taping of the David Letterman show during his first late-night season NBC in 1982. Werner Herzog was the main guest. He was promoting his new film...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Mr Nason If you are not otherwise entangled or engaged, will you marry me. That's the most accurate thing I've heard about Frank in a long while. Lori, I'm not married, entangled, or otherwise engaged, but I DO live in NYC, which is entaglement enough. I had a feeling you'd be on "my side"...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Of course, it should be remembered that Addison DeWitt is not meant to be an entirely admirable fellow.
