Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

That garbled sentence near the end of my previous post SHOULD read:

Right about what? About busing, about not closing the "bath houses" in New York City in the 1980s to stop the spread of AIDS because it would be a "homophobic infringement" on gay rights?

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Yeah, the left was really right on Joseph Stalin. Read the articles on the Soviet Union published in The Nation and The New Republic, the New Masses and other liberal/left venues in the 1930s and 1940s and weep tears of blood. Jean-Paul Sartre was "right" about Stalin? Ask Albert Camus. Sa...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

It amused me to hear President Obama today at a press conference say that "most Americans were against helping England when they were being bombed nightly during the London Blitz -- but that doesn't mean they were right." Precisely what I was saying in my earlier post. Damn, I'm beginning ...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Frank --.Not surprising that most Americans don't want to support the president's military strike against Syria. Americans are isolationist by nature. Over 90% of the American people were against intervening in World War II for two long years until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and Germany declared war ...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Let's not forget that the U.S. was not only fighting Germany but Japan as well. After all, it was the Japanese who attacked us. So America was fighting in the Pacific Theater, on the Western Front, and North Africa and Italy AND supplying the Red Army with weapons and food. I'm not sure if the Japan...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Orwell famously wrote in his essay on Gandhi that "non-violent resistence can work when you're opposing the British; it works less well when you're dealing with Nazis." I'm sure that Frank will respond that the British were just as brutal (they were not -- they eventually gave up India); o...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Correction: I meant "said," not "saud." (Could that have been a Freudian slip? Maybe a Saudian slipper.)

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Violence stopped the fascists and Nazis cold in their murderous tracks and liberated the desth camps and occupied countries. Two atom bombs dropped on Japan stopped Japanese aggression and prevented an invasion of mainland Japan which would have cost millions of lives. Violence enabled Hemingway to ...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Frank, what was that question about the worm again? I must have missed it. The unpleasant truth is that sometimes violence does solve things. I could give you examples, but you already know them. Besides the violence is already going on in Syria, and the use of chemical weapons bt the Assad regime i...

Lori -- Chomsky will be against any use of American military force anywhere, at any time, for any reason. He can do it in his sleep. Still, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Ezra -- I don't derive my view of human nature from the currently fashionably/soon-to-be unfashionable neurosciences, but from a lifetime (so far) of reading literature and history. The results of such an approach must be partial, contradictory, and subject to interpretation -- but isn't that true o...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

A man who does not accept the existence of human nature ultimately does not accept the existence of real, actual human beings, only his theory of them. He professes to love humanity but he in fact loves only the creatures of his infinitely malleable theory; when real people stubbornly refuse to be r...

Re: THE PAVILION ANNEX

Human nature will find a way to corrupt anything, even the most peaceful and high-minded religions. But what's so distasteful about the corruption of religion is how damnably pious its practitioners are. Spirituality is just religion with all the inconvenient duties and obligations removed. You can ...
