Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Although I must say, Frank, I find that picture of the woman with one eye wearing glasses with just one lens very unnerving.

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Frank, I'm actrually one of the rare New Yorkers who defends the vast middle of the country against snobs and elitists who put it down. I know full well that there are plenty of smart, interesting, cultured folk in every state in the union. (Well, maybe one or two states could use a few more.) The f...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

[quote="Ezra Lb."]The lines are straight. If you don't believe me fetch a ruler.

It's hard to believe, but when you look at the lines closely, you can see they're straight. But even if they weren't straight, there'd be nothing wrong with that.

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Too bad Joan Rivers died. She was single, too. First things first, welcome back. I've missed you and your way of expressing yourself. Now about Ms Rivers, do you really wanna look like what ever phrase is out there for a male gold digger? I mean it's not like she was the only elder!y, rich and sing...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Chuck, Yes, I suck at both dating and job hunting, which often tend to wind up with me sitting in front of not only the same kind of woman but the very same woman. "I see there's a gap of two years between relationships. What were you doing during that period?" I should really throw in the...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

By the way, here's an interesting piece from the British magazine PROSPECT on how time machine fiction has become all the rage among "mainstream" novelists these days:

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Once again, my apologies for being unforgivably absent for so long. My college pals have all packed up and gone home, and after cleaning up the place I was fervervently building up my blogs with entries on Bettie Page, Israel (yeah, that again), Budd Schulberg, American architecture, a British play ...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Chuck, I've had a little fun, a lot of aggravation. I was hoping to have a fantastic love affair this summer, but it hasn't happened, at least not yet. How many days of summer do I have left? "Meatspace" -- that's a somewhat chilling but entirely apt description for we flesh-and-bloodys ou...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Everybody here -- all my good friends and intellectual sparring partners -- please accept my apologies for being absent the past few weeks. August has been unusually hectic for me this year. My oldest friend and former college roommate is visiting New York (he lives in Vienna now), and although he's...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

Steve -- Thank you. You know how these projects are invariably works-in-progress, and I'm learning and ironing out the wrinkles as I go along. Rob, that Russian Sherlock Holmes sounds fascinating. I'd love to see it. Maybe they can get Putin to do a guest appearance as Professor Moriarty. Typecasting!

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

I learned how it's done by watching countless "guests" on TV talk shows and news programs mentioning the name of their new book in the first sentence of every answer they give to a question. Utterly shameless, but that's how the game is played these days. As the old saying goes, we all eve...

Re: Robert Nason's Culture Café

DC, perhaps the most "European" city in America, far more so than New York Which makes sense, as you probably know, because the streets were designed by Pierre L'Enfant around 1790. THAT was the name I was thinking of. I could have looked it up, but I was hoping it would just "come&q...

Re: Frank Church's news corner, the sequel.

I think Barber's nailed it, about both Russia and Frank. I'll only add that Frank reflexively hates America and her allies, and instinctively supports anyone who opposes them, including American "dissenters," the one group of Americans he does like. He claims to be sympathetic to the "...
