It's Official.

The administration announced that we are in a recession. No wonder it feels like the early 70s (or 80s), only with no W.I.N. buttons.

Don't get me wrong, Lori-With-an-I--the peace and quiet is welcome. Gonad-tweaking you can get anywhere.

This is a quiet board.

Like a library. Right now I'm reading Poul Anderson's The Queen of Air and Darkness (in an anthology) and The Portable James Joyce. My son is being forced to read The Scarlet Letter in his HS English class right now, and he hates the book. After reading some of the comments here, I look forward to r...

Gwyneth:

Name: Greg Source: unca20081110.htm What Harlan says. I'm going through this with my son right now. We had to find out the hard way, through repeated stabs through the heart, that just about everything he tells us now is a lie. Failed classes, his mother's missing jewelry (and an extensive collecti...

Barney, I was not responding to your question, I was responding to Frank Church's assumption. To answer your question, it's been a while but I believe it's a product shot of an eBay item. I was looking for figurines of monkeys wearing fez hats, and it popped up. I found it very evocative of an era, ...

Thanks, Barber.

As far as my previous avatar goes, I did not find it racist at all. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go paint my lawn jockey.

Half Price

Name: Greg
Source: unca20081110.htm
Just got back from Half Price Books and did not find any Ellison titles for sale. Haven't seen any for the 10 years I've been going there.

Naturally, I would not buy Harlan's books from a reseller because, you know, no royalties. I was just checking.

Manners

Name: Greg Source: unca20081110.htm I disagree... I am constantly reminding my Texas-raised children not to address us as "sir" and "ma'am." That's not how *I* was raised in the Midwest. Most kids in this part of the country are very polite (except tonight, Hallowe'en, when greed overcomes Baptist ...

Out-of-work writer.

Name: Greg Source: unca20081110.htm The worst part about getting laid off is the indignity of an HR moron saying you are being, "transitioned" because of the "macroeconomic environment" and it hurts them just as much as it hurts you. Like fun it does! Then they sent an e-mail to the division saying...

We generally wear overhauls around here, there's no zippers nor button flys to fuss with. Plenty of pockets, though.

John Zeock:

Name: Greg Source: unca20081110.htm Talk about coincidence: I was doing a copyright search on Harlan's "Rock God" (don't ask, it's a twisted hobby of mine) and "The World's Greatest Sinner" was returned: http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=8&ti=1,8&Search%5FArg=Rock%20God&...

Yes, thanks, Barber, I am introducing myself, just taking a long time doing it. I like to sidle up to these things. And, like Peggy, I am really just living in Texas, I'm not actually *from* here. It's a hanging offense to falsely claim you're a native, I should really watch that. And as for the cat...

The cat just pissed all over the seat of my best jeans. That'll teach me to leave them on the floor. I think there's a story in this somewhere. Not a moral, though, because cats don't have any. I'm from Texas, by the way, just like Lance Armstrong and that guy who wrote the Conan books. Where are y'...
